Memphis Redbirds News Release
METAIRIE, La. - The Memphis Redbirds lost to the News Orleans Zephyrs by a 4-1 margin in a scheduled seven-inning contest on Sunday evening at Zephyr Field.
The Redbirds' lone run came off the bat of Audry Perez, who hit his sixth homer of the season in the seventh. Outfielder Mike O'Neill also had two hits.
Redbirds starter Boone Whiting (4-7) allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings in the loss. The right-hander struck out seven, which included six of his first nine Zephyrs faced on the night.
Whiting began the night strongly by retiring the first 10 in a row to begin the game. He ran into trouble in the fifth as Kyle Jensen knocked a one-out single to center and scored on a RBI triple off the center field wall by former Redbird Zack Cox.
New Orleans tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 4-0 lead, highlighted by RBI hits from Justin Bour, Jensen, and Cox.
Redbirds reliever Sam Tuivailala hit and struck out his two batters faced in his Triple-A debut.
Zephyrs starter Robert Morey (1-1) struck out eight over six scoreless for the win.
The Redbirds and Zephyrs will meet at 1 pm on Labor Day at Zephyr Field for the last game of the regular season. Left-hander Andrew Heaney (5-4, 3.84) will man the bump for New Orleans. Memphis' starter will be announced at a later time.
