Winston-Salem Dash News Release

ZEBULON, N.C. (Aug. 31, 2014) - The Carolina Mudcats stunned Winston-Salem with a run in the eighth and a game-winning tally in the bottom of the ninth for a 3-2 triumph on Sunday night at Five County Stadium.

Logan Vick led off the ninth with a hit for the Mudcats (33-35, 62-73), and he moved to second on a double play. Brandon Hardin (0-2) bounced back with a strikeout of Ryan Battaglia to send the Dash to the precipice of extra innings.

However, Yhoxian Medina pushed home Vick on a strange play to send the fans home happy. Medina rolled one near the chalk at third base, and Trey Michalczewski knocked it down with a backhand stab. While trying to plant, Michalczewski stumbled, and Vick rolled around third base. Michalczewski took a few steps toward the plate before uncorking a high throw to the plate. Dash catcher Michael Marjama had to jump up for the ball, allowing Vick to tiptoe to the plate on what was ruled an RBI single.

Winston-Salem (30-39, 60-78) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the sixth, with the first run also coming around on a bizarre sequence. With men at first and third and one down, Courtney Hawkins hit a pop up to Battaglia, Carolina's catcher. Battaglia snagged it in foul territory, but an attempted double play throw to third hit off Adam Engel's helmet and ricocheted into left field.

After Engel scored and Cleuluis Rondon moved up to second on that error, Keon Barnum lashed an RBI single to left-center to give Winston a two-run cushion. However, the Muddies pulled within one in the home half of the sixth thanks to LeVon Washington's RBI single. Two frames later, a two-out walk and a balk provided Joe Sever with a run-scoring chance, and he delivered the tying hit to right field.

Both starters thrived in no decisions. Dash righty Tyler Danish permitted just one run on four hits over six innings. This lowered his overall earned run average between Winston-Salem and Low-A Kannapolis to 2.08, seventh-lowest among qualifiers in full-season Minor League Baseball. Danish did not allow more than two runs in his final 12 starts.

On Carolina's side, Adam Plutko worked into the seventh and surrendered two runs on eight hits before Jacob Lee (4-0) kept the Dash off the board through the ninth.

Winston-Salem concludes the 2014 season at 12 p.m. on Monday from Zebulon. The Dash send Opening Day starter J.B. Wendelken (6-10, 5.37 ERA) to the hill against fellow right-hander Mike Clevinger (0-0, 5.40 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 11:45 a.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast.
