Steelheads Shot Down in Kitchener

August 31, 2014 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga Steelheads News Release

Coming off of a late loss against the Erie Otters on Saturday night, the Mississauga Steelheads arrive at "The Aud" in Kitchener on Sunday morning looking for a quick rebound. Head Coach James Boyd went with Mississauga's 2012 draft pick Cameron Zanussi between the pipes.

Zanussi was tested early on in the game, and would be tested often throughout. The rookie goaltender was up to the task however, turning in 19 saves in the first period alone. The defensive efforts were appreciated by the Steelheads, who would give their goaltender some run support with 6 minutes to play in the period, as Josh Burnside scored his first of the preseason from Sean Day and Jared Walsh.

The Steelheads would put some of their newly-acquired size on display throughout the game, and it would be OHL Exceptional Player Sean Day leading the way. Registering on the radar of the entire OHL, the 16-year old Day looked authoritative on the ice with his physicality.

After a strong effort on the penalty kill in Saturday's contest, the Trout would be tested again on Sunday. Despite another great effort, Kitchener's power play broke through late in the second as Ryan MacInnis scored to even the scoring. The game-tying marker was the only blemish on an otherwise impressive special teams day that saw the Trout successful on 6 of 7 penalty killing attempts.

The third period did nothing to resolve the 1-1 tie, and as per preseason rules, the Steelheads and Rangers went right into a shootout. Despite a 45-save performance by Zanussi in regulation, Gustaf Franzen and Nick Magyar were able to solve him in the shootout. Mike McLeod had a beautiful attempt, only to hit the post, leaving Lucas Venuto as the lone Steelhead scorer, giving Kitchener a 2-1 victory.

The Steelheads will round out their road preseason schedule tomorrow afternoon in Guelph. Their third game in three days gets underway at 2:00 PM.

The Trout will then return home to kick off their home exhibition schedule on Friday, September 5 at 7:00 PM as the Guelph Storm visit the Milton Sports Centre. The Trout will then welcome the Kitchener Rangers to Vic Johnston Arena in Streetsville on Sunday, September 7 at 2:00 PM, before wrapping up the preseason at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville against Erie on Sunday, September 14 at 3:00 PM. Tickets to all preseason contests will be available on location for $5.00.
