Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles prevented the hosts from getting an early lead in the third minute, going to his left to parry a Fabian Espindola shot away. Later, Espindola fired from outside the box and Robles was able to collect.
On the other end in the 19th minute, Thierry Henry slid a through ball to Bradley Wright-Phillips, who pulled one past goalkeeper Bill Hamid and just by the left post. Soon after, Hamid made a terrific save on Wright-Phillips to keep the game scoreless, diving to block the Red Bull forward's header. New York controlled the latter stages of the opening interval and Tim Cahill was able to beat Hamid three minutes from the break as his right footed shot rolled past the United goalkeeper and pinged off the post.
United took the lead in the 57th minute. A long ball played into New York's defensive end bounced freely and Luis Silva got to it first, as he rounded Robles and put it home. With the Red Bulls pressed forward trying find an equalizer, United sealed the three points in second half stoppage time, as Eddie Johnson was able to chip Robles, who got a piece of the attempt, and the ball bounced into the net.
