Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CLINTON, IOWA - The Clinton LumberKings beat the Kernels 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Ashford University Field. Clinton tallied the lone run in the fifth inning for the victory. The Kernels have now lost four games in a row and look to avoid the sweep to the LumberKings on Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

The game was scoreless through the first five innings as the teams combined to tally four total hits. The Kernels picked up just one of those hits, a two-out single by Chad Christensen in the first inning. They recorded their next hit in the sixth inning when Zack Larson led off with a single. During the first five innings, Clinton left a total of seven runners on base.

Lewis Thorpe started for the Kernels and went four scoreless innings in a no-decision. He allowed three hits while striking out four and walking four. Jose Flores started for the LumberKings and pitched three scoreless innings, collecting a no-decision. He allowed one hit while striking out two and walking one.

Clinton scored the game's only run in the bottom of the fifth inning against Kernels reliever Chris Mazza. Martin Peguero led off the frame with a double. He advanced to third base on a one-out groundout by Jeff Zimmerman. Peguero then scored on a wild pitch by Mazza with two outs as the LumberKings jumped in front 1-0.

Mazza (4-4) went two total innings on the hill, allowing the one run on two hits for the loss. He struck out three and walked none. Dallas Gallant retired all six he faced in relief, striking out four over two innings.

The Kernels had the leadoff man on in their last four at-bats but were unable to push a run across. In the sixth inning, Larson singled to begin the inning but did not get past second base. The team recorded two hits in the seventh inning but was unable to get a runner into scoring position or plate a run. Ryan Walker drew a leadoff walk to begin the eighth inning but was stranded at second base to end the inning. Engelb Vielma reached first base with an infield single to start the ninth inning, but no runner got into scoring position.

Blake Holovach (7-6) picked up the victory for the LumberKings, throwing five scoreless innings in relief. He allowed just three hits while striking out three and walking one. Emilio Pagan worked around Vielma's single in the ninth inning to notch his 16th save, striking out one and walking none.
