Vancouver Magic Number Down To One After 5-4 Win

August 31, 2014 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Vancouver Canadians News Release

(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, B.C.) - Trailing by a run in the bottom of the 8th inning, Canadians 1B Ryan McBroom smacked a two-run double down the left field line that helped Vancouver to a come from behind 5-4 victory over Spokane on Saturday night. The win, Vancouver's 44th of the season, moved them to within one game of the North Division second half pennant with two regular season games remaining.

The Canadians trailed at two different points in the series opener as an early error from Vancouver 2B Richard Urena helped the Indians open up the scoring in the top of the 2nd inning.

Urena would atone for his early miscue with a triple to lead off the bottom of the 3rd inning and became one of three runs to cross the plate off of Spokane starter RHP Nick Gardewine who went six innings, scattering six hits in search of his team-leading 7th win of the season.

Vancouver LHP Jairo Labourt went five innings, striking out five as he left the game with a 3-1 lead, but watched as RHP Alberto Tirado allowed a trio of runs, only one of which was earned, to give Spokane a 4-3 lead heading to the bottom of the 8th inning.

With the Canadians backs up against the wall in the home half of the 8th inning, Indians RHP Adam Parks came in and got two outs right out of the gates before DH Tim Locastro singled to left field followed by a base hit from SS Franklin Barreto to put runners at first and second base. 1B Ryan McBroom would fall behind no balls and two strikes but hit the next pitch down the left field line scoring both Locastro from second base and Barreto all the way from first base to give Vancouver a 5-4 lead.

From there, Canadians closer RHP Phil Kish pitched a three-up, three-down top of the 9th inning to secure the victory and recorded his 8th save in as many chances.

With the victory, Vancouver's magic number to clinch the Northwest League North reduces to one, meaning any Canadians victory or Tri-City Dust Devils loss in the final two games secures Vancouver's fifth consecutive trip to the post-season.

The Canadians (19-17) victory also eliminated Everett (16-20) from the playoff picture as the Aquasox, who fell 8-1 to Tri-City (18-18), fall three games back with two games to play. Spokane (15-21) is also eliminated from the second half pennant chase after Saturday's loss in Vancouver, but claimed the first-half pennant and will host Game 2 and possibly Game 3 of the North Division Final.

Vancouver will host Spokane on Sunday, August 31st at 1:05pm in hopes of securing the second-half pennant on an A&W Family Fun Sunday out at Scotiabank Field.
