Reyes Homers Twice, But Rockies Fall Short
August 30, 2014 - Pioneer League (PL)
Grand Junction Jackalopes News Release
Randy Reyes homered twice and drove in four runs, but it wasn't enough as the Grand Junction Rockies came up short for the ninth time in 10 games, falling to the Ogden Raptors 9-7.
The loss pushes the Rockies to 3.5 games back of the Raptors for first place in the South Division with just five games to play. Ogden's magic number is only two.
A night after slugging 19 hits, the Raptors had an 18 hit night, with eight of them going for extra bases.
Ogden drew first blood as Melvin Santana followed Billy Bereszniewicz' leadoff triple in the first inning with an RBI single, then with two out, Justin Chigbogu hit his 20th home run of the season to give the Raptors a 3-0 lead, but it didn't last, as the Rockies sent eight men to the plate in the second and scored three runs to tie the game.
With two out in the bottom of the second, Cody Bellinger singled home Theo Alexander to give the Raptors the lead again, and Julian Leon followed with a double to make the score 5-3 Ogden. They scored an unearned run in the third to get their lead back to three, and they got the lead to five in the fourth when Bellinger tripled home Bereszniewicz and scored on a Leon ground out.
Reyes brought the Rockies within four runs when he hit his seventh home run of the season with two out in the sixth inning, but Ogden got the run back when Leon doubled home Bellinger.
After and error and a walk in the eighth, Reyes homered again to bring the Rockies within two, and Yonathan Daza began the top of the ninth with a single, but Joe Broussard struck out Dom Nunez, Kevin Padlo, and Hamlet Marte to end the game.
The Rockies head home to begin their final home series of the regular season when the Orem Owlz visit Suplizio Field for the first game of a 3-game series Sunday afternoon. First pitch will be at 4:05.
