Springfield Cardinals News Release

Tulsa, OK - The Springfield Cardinals won Game 1, 5-2, but the Tulsa Drillers answered with a 1-0 win in Game 2, as the two teams split the doubleheader before 6,990 fans at ONEOK Field on Saturday. Both games were seven innings in duration.

Game 1:

Down to their final three outs, the Cardinals rallied from behind with four runs in the top of the seventh to claim the 5-2 win in the opener of the twin bill.

The Drillers (31-36, 69-67) opened an early advantage in Game 1, striking for a two-out tally in the bottom of the first against LHP Kyle Hald (W, 11-4). 2B Taylor Featherston extended the frame with a two-out walk, before racing around to third on a single from 1B Ryan Casteel. LF Tyler Massey then placed an RBI single through the middle, bringing in Featherston for the 1-0 lead.

Tulsa doubled the early advantage in the bottom of the third. With two down, Massey kept the inning going with a walk, before racing all the way home from first base on an RBI double by 3B Trevor Story, making it 2-0.

After four scoreless frames from RHP Ryan Arrowood to start his outing, the Cardinals (33-34, 67-70) broke through against him in the top of the fifth. Leading off the inning, 1B Jonathan Rodriguez was hit by a pitch, becoming the first Cardinal to reach since SS Gerg Garcia led off the game with a single. One out later, Rodriguez moved to second on a groundout, before coming in on an RBI single by CF Matt Williams, bringing the Cardinals within one run, 2-1.

The Cardinals then completed the comeback and raced in front with four runs against LHP Kraig Sitton (L, 4-8) in the top of the seventh. Rodriguez again sparked the offense, singling himself on to start the stanza. One out later, LF David Popkins knocked a base hit and Williams walked, loading the bases with only one down. Pinch-hitting SS Alex Mejia promptly tied the game with an RBI single, plating Rodriguez to make it 2-2. With the bases still loaded, Garcia skied an RBI sacrifice fly to left-center, just deep enough to bring in Popkins from third for the go-ahead run. 2B Breyvic Valera then provided some insurance, driving a two-run single up the middle, scoring Williams and Mejia for the 5-2 lead.

RHP Joey Donofrio (S, 15) took over in the bottom of the seventh and worked around a pair of hits, dealing a scoreless final frame to close the Cardinals 5-2 win in seven innings.

Game 2:

The Drillers battled out the split in the doubleheader by edging the Cardinals with a 1-0 win in seven innings in Game 2.

After four scoreless frames alternated by Springfield LHP Ryan Sherriff (L, 2-7) and Tulsa RHP Shan Broyles, the Drillers (32-36, 70-67) cracked the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth. C Will Swanner led off with a double, before Sherriff battled back with a strikeout for the first out in the inning. After a groundout moved Swanner to third, he darted home on an infield RBI single tapped inside the third base line by 2B Cristhian Adames, lifting the Drillers into the 1-0 lead.

RHP Jeremy Berg came in for the final out in the fifth, before dealing a scoreless bottom of the sixth to keep the Cardinals (33-35, 67-71) within just one run. However, RHP Cole White (S, 16) navigated through the top of the seventh in 1-2-3 fashion, closing the 1-0 win for Tulsa in seven innings.
