Wilmington, Sacramento End in Scoreless Draw

August 30, 2014 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release

Wilmington, NC - Wilmington Hammerheads FC hosted Sacramento Republic FC in a scoreless draw at Legion Stadium on Saturday night. Wilmington is still searching for the points needed to secure a definite position in the current playoff race. Saturday's equalizer currently has the Hammerheads tied for the seventh seed slot with the Harrisburg City Islanders.

Sacramento entered the first half eager to notch another win on the East Coast after claiming a victory over the Charleston Battery on Wednesday night. Midfielder Rodrigo Lopez was offered a free kick in the 12th minute, however possession was soon reverted back to Wilmington as Sunny Jane took the ball for a breakaway before being denied by Sacramento goalkeeper Jacob Gleeson. Moments later, Sacramento dropped the ball into the penalty area off a corner kick, but was punched out by Hammerheads goalkeeper Brad Stuver.

Drew Ruggles led Wilmington with an opportunity on goal from a free kick that soared over the net in the 23rd minute following a foul on Ivan Mirkovic. Sacramento's James Kiffe and Chad Bartlome each responded shortly after with shots outside the penalty area leading into halftime, both of which we off-frame.

Sammy Ochoa put off his first shot of the night for the Hammerheads in the 73rd minute with a hard ball over the net, almost lifting Wilmington from the scoreless margin at hand. Midfielder Corben Bone had a key opportunity minutes later in the 76th minute, but could not get rid of the ball fast enough as Gleeson approached and forced him into a deflection.

The Hammerheads were close to pulling out a goal to increase the score in stoppage time as midfielder Steven Miller went for a breakaway down the sideline for a cross to Ochoa, but was knocked out by Sacramento forcing the corner and led to them ultimately regained possession.

The Hammerheads return to their home pitch of Legion Stadium on Wednesday, September 3 as they host Orlando City Soccer Club for their final home match of the regular season. Fans are encouraged to attend and show their support before the Hammerheads travel north to make a final push for the playoffs.
