New York Boulders News Release

(POMONA, N.Y.) - Despite making three errors, and being out hit 13-9, the New Jersey Jackals earned a 6-5 win over Rockland at Provident Bank Park on Saturday night. The win puts New Jersey (55-39) one game ahead of the Boulders (54-40) in the Can-Am League standings.

The Jackals jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning, loading the bases with nobody out. After Jon Talley hit a sacrifice fly to right, Tony Caldwell launched a three-run shot off Stephen Harrold for the early advantage. New Jersey added to that lead with a run in the third on a Jose Cuevas double.

Rockland's first attempt at a rally came in the bottom of the third when Matt Nandin and Ryan Stovall singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Jerod Edmondson then doubled to deep centerfield, driving in both runs. That two-base hit was the 166th of his career, tying the all-time Can-Am League record held by Chris Colabello.

Harrold, however, continued his early struggles in the fourth by giving up an RBI single to Alonzo Harris that made it a 6-2 ballgame. Following that base hit, Harrold found his groove and retired the next 11 batters he faced. Meanwhile, the offense continued their comeback trail, taking advantage of multiple New Jersey errors.

The Boulders put runners at the corners with one out and scored when third baseman Barnes threw a potential double play ball into right field. Two more errors in the fifth inning help Rockland cut the deficit to one. Stovall led off the frame with a single to right but Felix Sanchez misplayed the ball, allowing Stovall to advance to third.

Edmondson would follow with a lazy pop-up to left that was dropped by Joe Dunigan, scoring a run. Edmondson later scored on a sacrifice fly from Carlos Guzman, making it a 6-5 contest. Rockland then threatened to take the lead in the sixth, loading the bases with one out. However, relief pitcher Zach Staniewicz got out of the inning unscathed.

Rockland would threaten one last time, putting the tying run on base in the ninth. After Marcus Nidiffer singled with two outs, Junior Arrojo pinch ran and advanced to second on a wild pitch from closer Salvador Sanchez. However, Sanchez would strike out Giuseppe Papaccio for the final out, picking up his league-leading 25th save.

Isaac Pavlik (9-5) picked up the win tossing five innings while only allowing five runs on nine hits. The lefty veteran struck out three batters without walking anyone in the victory. Harrold (7-4) took the loss, giving up six runs on nine hits, pitching seven and one-third innings. The righty rallied from a rough beginning to strike out six batters.

The battle for the Can-Am League divisional crown continues on Sunday, August 31 when Rockland and New Jersey do battle in a 5 p.m. contest at Provident Bank Park. If the Jackals win one of the final two games of the regular season, they will capture the pennant before both teams meet in the best-of-seven Can-Am Championship Series.
