Winston-Salem Dash News Release

ZEBULON, N.C. (Aug. 30, 2014) - The Dash were eliminated from the playoff hunt on Friday, but Winston-Salem knocked off the Carolina Mudcats in a postseason-like contest by a score of 1-0 on Saturday night at Five County Stadium.

After a seven-inning chain of zeroes for both sides, Winston-Salem (30-38, 60-77) pushed across the game's lone run in the eighth. Keenyn Walker led off the frame with a single, and he moved to third with two down thanks to a sacrifice bunt and a groundout.

Courtney Hawkins followed with a sharp single to center field for his league-leading 84th RBI. This would be the only blemish from Carolina starter Dylan Baker (3-3), who worked a season-high eight innings in a tough-luck loss.

The Mudcats (32-35, 61-73) threatened in both the eighth and ninth innings, but Winston-Salem's bullpen duo of Brad Goldberg (4-4) and Zach Isler finished off the club's sixth shutout of 2014. In the eighth, Carolina had men at first and second with one out, but Joe Sever bounced one to Goldberg, who threw a one-hopper to Cleuluis Rondon. Rondon snagged the throw and completed a fantastic twin killing to squash the rally.

One frame later, Carolina put men at first and third with two down, but Ryan Battaglia grounded out to Trey Michalczewski at third. With the loss, the Mudcats' elimination number is down to one in the hunt for the Southern Division's wild card spot.

Goldberg logged two and a third hitless innings, and Isler earned the save by stranding those two ninth-inning runners. Winston-Salem starter Brandon Brennan scattered six hits over five and two-thirds, the longest start of his High-A career.

Brennan did great work to escape danger in the early innings. Over Carolina's first four innings of offense, the Muddies stranded five runners, all of whom were in scoring position at the time of the third out.

Winston-Salem eyes a series-clinching win in the penultimate game of the regular season on Sunday. Tyler Danish (5-3, 2.73 ERA) will make the final start of his stellar season for the Dash, while Carolina counters with fellow righty Adam Plutko (4-9, 4.17 ERA). First pitch is set for 6 p.m., and pregame coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast.
