Winterhawks Knock off Tri-Cities 5-2 in Preseason Play Saturday

Oliver Bjorkstrand had two goals as the Portland Winterhawks defeated the Tri-City Americans 5-2 on Saturday in preseason action from Everett, WA.

Justin Gutierrez started things off for the Americans, making it 1-0 at the 6:11 mark of the first period. Bjorkstrand evened the score at 1-1 with a shorthanded goal at the 12:35 mark, and Paul Bittner gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead with a power play goal at 15:28 to give the Hawks a 2-1 advantage heading into the second period.

Evan Weinger extended Portland's lead to 3-1 at the 4:33 mark of the second with an unassisted goal, followed by Bjorkstrand scoring his second of the game at the 12:08 mark to extend Portland's lead to 4-1 after 40 minutes.

Lucas Nickles got the Americans within two at the 16:30 mark of the third period, but that was as close as Tri-Cities would get, as Ethan Price scored a shorthanded empty net goal to make it 5-2 for the Hawks, which would remain as the final.

Adin Hill made his first start of the postseason between the pipes for the Hawks, and stopped 31 of 33 shots. Tri-Cities Americans netminder Evan Sarthou allowed five goals on 34 Portland shots.

The Hawks were 2-8 on the power play and a perfect 8-8 on the penalty kill.

Portland's back in action tomorrow evening when they take on the tournament host Everett Silvertips at 7 p.m.
