Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Another Painful Night At Lelacheur
The Aberdeen IronBirds suffered a second straight defeat at the hands of the Lowell Spinners last night, as the hosts took a 9-0 win. John Means got the start for the IronBirds and was fantastic through the first five innings. Entering the sixth, he had allowed just two hits and two hit batters, as the game was still scoreless. Lowell changed that in the sixth. They had three hits in the inning, including a two run double to left field off the bat of Aneudis Peralta, giving the Spinners a 2-0 lead. Means exited with two outs in the sixth, his longest outing of the season. All told, he allowed four hits and two runs, striking out six. He did not walk a batter and has only walked two batters all season. Lowell blew the game open in the seventh off of reliever Zach Albin. They scored six runs on six hits, including three triples, seizing an 8-0 lead. They tacked on one more in the eighth to take the 9-0 shutout win. Offensively for the IronBirds, they had two hits as both Steve Wilkerson and Riley Palmer each hit doubles. Tad Gold also walked twice.
Offense Struggles to Get Going in Lowell
After hitting .248 (26-105) in their three game series with the Hudson Valley Renegades, the IronBirds are hitting .129 (8-62) in the first two games of this series against Lowell and have been outscored 22-1 in the two games.
Error-Free Streak Ends
The IronBirds committed an error in the eighth inning last night, ending their stretch of error-free baseball that lasted a whopping 51.1 innings. Before last night's error, the IronBirds' last error was in Sunday's first inning. The four games in a row without an error ties a franchise record set from July 31-August 3, 2003.
On the Mound Tonight...
LHP Stephen Tarpley gets the start for the IronBirds in Aberdeen's final road contest of the season. Tarpley is 2-5 on the season with a 4.17 ERA. He leads the team in starts, innings pitched, walks, and strikeouts as the Orioles' 2013 3rd round pick will make his 12th start and 13th appearance tonight. Last time out, on August 23rd against the Spinners, Tarpley took the loss as the IronBirds fell 3-2. He went seven innings, allowing just three hits and one run. He did not walk a batter and struck out a new career-high eight. He will be opposed by the Spinners' RHP Reed Reilly. Reilly is 0-1 on the season with a 4.46 ERA in nine previous starts.
