Another Offensive Outburst as Ports Pound Nuts 17-5

MODESTO, Calif. - One night removed from scoring 10 runs in an inning, the Stockton Ports put up a nine-spot in the sixth inning on Friday night at John Thurman Field. Stockton used that nine-run inning to send them on their way to a 17-5 drumming of the Modesto Nuts to open the final series of the regular season.

Stockton opened the scoring in the first on a single by Tyler Marincov that scored Chad Pinder to make it a 1-0 ballgame. Modesto countered with three runs in the second on back-to-back home runs, a two-run shot by Dave Bergin and a solo homer by Dean Espy off Ports starter Josh Bowman (8-7).

Trailing 3-1, Stockton plated five runs in the top of the third off Nuts starter Devin Burke (6-12). Daniel Robertson reached on an error to begin the frame. Two batters later, Matt Olson and Marincov drew back-to-back walks to load the bases and Beau Taylor followed with a two-run double to right that tied the game at 3-3. Ryon Healy came up next and hit a two-run double to left that gave the Ports a 5-3 lead. Two batters later, Bobby Crocker singled to center to drive in Healy and make it a 6-3 advantage and knock Burke from the contest.

Burke suffered the loss, going 2.2 innings and allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits while striking out two.

Modesto scored its final runs in the third to make it a one-run ballgame. After a leadoff single by Juan Ciriaco, Mike Tauchman tripled to left to make it 6-4. Two batters later, Tauchman scored on an RBI groundout by Jordan Ribera to cut the Ports lead to a run at 6-5.

Bowman would complete five innings of work, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out four while picking up his sixth straight win.

Stockton plated nine runs in the sixth to put the game away. Crocker got the inning started with a triple to right. After Wade Kirkland reached on an infield single, Daniel Robertson walked to load the bases. Chad Pinder came up next and reached on an error committed by first baseman Jordan Ribera and Matt Olson followed and reached on an error made by Ciriaco, the second baseman, at which point Nuts reliever Peter Tago was lifted for John Keck. Marincov greeted Keck with a sac-fly to center and Taylor followed with an RBI single. After Healy reached on an infield single, Crocker walked to load the bases and Kirkland hit a grand slam to left to make it a 15-5 Ports lead.

Tago allowed five runs (two earned) on three hits in 2.1 innings of work while Keck recorded all three outs in the inning and allowed four runs on three hits while striking out two.

The Ports added a run in the seventh as Marincov singled with two outs and scored on an RBI single by Taylor to make it 16-5. Stockton's final run came in the ninth on an RBI double by Healy with two outs off Ribera, who moved over to the mound from first base to pitch the frame.

Andres Avila pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Bowman while Bobby Wahl pitched the final two innings without allowing a run while striking out four.

The Ports and Nuts play the second game of their four-game set on Saturday at John Thurman Field. Left-hander Chris Lamb (4-5, 3.10 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Modesto right-hander Tyler Gagnon (0-2, 3.62 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
