Midland Breaks Tie in the Ninth to Take Series

San Antonio Missions News Release

San Antonio suffered a frustrating 3-2 loss to Midland in their final home game of the season Friday before 5,633 at Wolff Stadium.

For the second straight night, the Missions had a two-run first inning against a RockHounds' hurler. Friday night it occurred against right-hander Deryk Hooker, who allowed RBI singles to both Hunter Renfroe and Diego Goris.

Midland responded in the top of the second with a pair of their own against San Antonio right-hander Josh Geer. Dusty Coleman got the RockHounds on the board with an RBI ground rule double to right. Three batters later Hiro Nakajima tied the game at two with an RBI single to center.

Both pitching staffs would not allow another run through the eighth inning. Hooker allowed six hits and three walks, while striking out one over four and two-thirds innings. He was followed by relievers Frank Gailey and former Mission Tim Sexton (2-1), who combined on three and a third hitless innings.

Geer scattered nine hits and no walks, while striking out two over seven strong innings. After Adys Portillo struck out the side in the eighth, Luis De La Cruz ran into trouble in the top of the ninth.

De La Cruz allowed a leadoff single to Chad Oberacker before striking out Nakajima on a bunt attempt. With next batter Blake Forsythe up the plate, De La Cruz (6-9) attempted to pick off Oberacker at first. Unfortunately for the Missions, his throw got passed first baseman Jason Hagerty and down the right-field line, allowing Oberacker to advance all the way to third. After Forsythe worked a walk, Conner Crumbliss put the 'Hounds up for good with a sacrifice fly to center.

Jose Flores worked around a Cody Overbeck one-out single in the bottom of the ninth to notch his 12th save of the season.

San Antonio (31-36, 67-70) hits the road Saturday to begin a season-ending, three-game series against Corpus Christi (31-36, 65-72) at Whataburger Field. First pitch Saturday is set for 7:10 PM. Right-hander Leonel Campos (2-6, 5.37) will take the hill for the Missions, while the Hooks counter with southpaw Josh Hader (1-1, 8.04).
