Hammerheads Knock off Miracle, 3-1

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Fort Myers Miracle fell 3-1 to the Jupiter Hammerheads in a seven inning game on Friday evening in the regular season finale at JetBlue Park.

Originally slated as a doubleheader to start at 5:05 p.m., a two-hour, 27-minute delay pushed first pitch to 7:25 p.m. and only one game. The second game has been rescheduled as part of a doubleheader in Jupiter, Fla. at Roger Dean Stadium on Saturday beginning at 5:05 p.m.

Scoreless going into the bottom of the fourth, the Miracle broke a 0-0 tie against Jupiter reliever Matt Milroy. Dalton Hicks led off with a single into left and moved to second on an infield hit by Adam Brett Walker. Max Kepler then bounced a single through the right side to load the bases. After Tyler Grimes hit into a force play that retired Hicks at home, Jairo Rodriguez hit a ground ball to second base to drive in Walker, 1-0.

In the top of the fifth, the Hammerheads took the lead on a pair of two-out singles. Jesus Solarzano reached on a double with one out. Then, Miracle starter D.J. Baxendale struck out Noah Perio, but surrendered a bloop hit into center field from Juan Avila that tied the game, 1-1. Ryan Goetz followed with a line drive into left that brought in Avila and put the Hammerheads on top.

After exiting the fourth with no further damage and stranding three, Milroy (2-9) again worked out of a bases loaded jam in a scoreless bottom of the fifth to maintain the Jupiter advantage.

The Hammerheads added an insurance run in the sixth off Miracle reliever Alex Muren. Matt Juengel doubled into left to start the frame. Muren struck out Blake Barber and Chadd Krist ground out to short advanced Juengel to third. Cody Keefer then lined a 2-2 pitch up the middle for a run-scoring single, 3-1, and a third two-out RBI for the Jupiter order.

Milroy pitched a perfect sixth and earned the victory when Colby Suggs stranded the tying runs at first and second in the seventh. The save for Suggs was his third of the season.

Dan Jenning started on a MLB rehabilitation assignment and tossed two scoreless frames.

Baxendale (4-4) allowed two runs on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Muren gave up the one run on four hits and a punch out. Todd Van Steensel pitched a scoreless top half of the seventh for the Miracle pen.

The Miracle (79-57, 38-29) now head to Jupiter, Fla. to play a twin bill with the Hammerheads (50-84, 23-44) on Saturday at Roger Dean Stadium.
