Amarillo Bulls Training Camp Recap Week 1

August 29, 2014 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Amarillo Bulls News Release

AMARILLO, TX - The opening week of the Amarillo Bulls training camp wraps up tomorrow (Saturday) morning before the hopefuls get a well deserved couple of days off.

Players have been battling hard on the ice in two sessions and in between taking part in off-ice conditioning. Before the players do receive that that time off, they will be participating in scrimmages during the afternoon where the coaching staff led by Jon Rogger can see them in a game setting.

Rogger said they are going to continue the two-a-day sessions next week right up until Friday before the exhibition game in Odessa. As for reaction to the first week of camp, the Coaching Staff is pleased where they are at.

"We are somewhat excited of where we are at training camp right now," said Rogger. "There is nothing too surprising at this point. We are extremely excited with our defense (carried over from Main Camp). We had a couple of goalies go down early and that is unfortunate, but we are working our way through that. Up front, I think it is going to be a grind to put the puck in the net."

Taking steps forward and not backwards is what all coaches hope the players at training camp are accomplishing, whether it is getting in better physical shape, finishing off plays in front of the net or moving the puck up the ice quickly.

"It's key for us since we have so few returning players," Rogger said. "To the guys credit, every day they have been working their tails off. Each day, I can honestly say they are getting better. They are coming closer and closer together as a team. As a coach that is all you can expect."

Timing and communication is something that will improve day to day at training camp and as well throughout the season of a sports team whether hockey or football. The Bulls players appear to be constantly communicating with one another on passing and location on the ice.

"It was important Thursday to put the guys in lines and get out there to play," Rogger said. "That is sometimes better than just flow drills. It's guys getting to know one another get a feel where they are on the ice."
