Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AUGUST 28, 2014) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, suffered the loss 4-3 to the Winston-Salem Dash in an eleven-inning game on Thursday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The Pelicans decreased their magic number to three games in order to clinch the second half Southern Division title, as the Salem Red Sox lost to the Frederick Keys. David Lyon was a home run away from the cycle in Thursday's contest.
After a scoreless first, the Dash (29-37, 59-76) picked up a leadoff double from Keon Barnum in the second inning. With two outs, Pelicans' starter Chad James then hit a batter and walked a batter to load the bases before walking in a run, putting Winston-Salem ahead 1-0.
The Pelicans (35-31, 79-55) answered back in the bottom of the second inning. Royce Bolinger led off with an infield single off of Dash starter James Dykstra and later scored on a triple by Lyon to right-center field, evening the game up 1-1.
Winston-Salem took back the lead in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a wild pitch from James, plating Trey Michalczewski to steal back the lead 2-1.
Myrtle Beach strung together two one-run innings in the fifth and sixth innings to take back the lead at 3-2.
In the fifth, Michael De Leon came to the plate with runners on first and second. De Leon reached base on a fielding error by the first baseman Barnum, scoring Nick Vickerson on the play. The unearned run tied the game at 2-2.
Lyon put the Pelicans ahead in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Ryan Cordell from third, making the score 3-2 Birds.
Myrtle Beach right-hander Justin Sprenger entered the game in the seventh, working around a leadoff single to pitch a scoreless frame. In the eighth, however, Winston-Salem took advantage of the reliever's blunder to force the game into extra innings. Keenyn Walker led off with a ground ball to Sprenger who threw the ball over first baseman Preston Beck's head. Walker advanced to second base on the throw. After a bunt single, to put runners on first and third with no outs, Barnum hit a ground ball to the right side of the infield. The fielder's choice scored Walker, tying the contest yet again, this time at 3-3.
The Dash broke the tie in the eleventh inning. Mike Marjama singled with one out against Myrtle Beach reliever Cody Kendall. Marjama moved to second base on a wild pitch, putting him in scoring position for C.J. Beatty. Beatty then hit a ground ball to second baseman Luis Mendez, who committed an error and allowed Marjama to score the go-ahead run from second base.
Raul Fernandez (2-3) earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief. Kendall (0-1) took his first loss of the season.
