Slammers Win 4-1 in Game Called Due to Rain and Wet Conditions

August 29, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
Joliet Slammers News Release

The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy- defeated the Florence Freedom 4-1 on Thursday night in a game shortened by rain to 6 completed innings. Joliet was batting in the bottom of the 7th with two men on base and nobody out and trailing 6-4 when the decision was made to put the tarp on the field. After a one hour-50 minute rain delay the tarp was pulled. The field was too muddy and ruled unplayable and the game was called at that point, just before 11:30pm. Florence had trailed 4-1 after 6 innings and had taken a 6-4 lead thanks to a 5-run top of the 7th. By rule however, since the lead changed in the top of an inning that was not able to be completed, the game reverts back to the last completed inning. That was the 6th inning and at the time Joliet still led 4-1, so that becomes the final score.

The Slammers led 4-0 after the first five innings. Joliet scored a run in the bottom of the 1st inning. They had three singles, a walk and there was a throwing error on Florence shortstop Rolando Gomez. The run came in on the error. They added to that lead with three runs in the bottom of the 5th. Matt Weaver had a 2-run double and Adam Giacalone added an RBI groundout. Joliet starter Matt Crim pitched very well. He gave up a run in the 6th on an RBI single from Adam Taylor that made the score 4-1. Crim left with that one run allowed on 9 hits in six innings with 7 strikeouts and no walks. The Joliet bullpen struggled after that John Maloney started the 7th and failed to retire the three batters he faced. Sam Moore and Kevin McNorton got into trouble as Florence scored a total of 5 runs in the top of the 7th. A Jacob Tanis 2-run single was the big hit in that inning. All that scoring however does not count for Florence as that 7th inning is wiped entirely by league rules.

In the middle of the 8th inning, the Slammers gave away $500 to lucky fan, Chris Cole, as part of their Amazing August/September promotion. Each home game the remainder of the season will see one fan go home with at least $250 dollars. The higher that night's attendance, the higher the payout will be. The payout on Friday, August 1st to a lucky winner was $5000.

Joliet begins a three-game series with the Frontier Greys on Friday night at 7:05pm. It is a Fireworks Friday and is also Game Show Night at the ballpark. Saturday's 6:05pm game is also a Fireworks Night as part of the holiday weekend. The Family Sunday contest will begin at a special holiday time of 5:05pm. Slammers action this season is broadcast live on 1340 WJOL and wjol.com. The audio/video feed of home games this season can be seen for free at independentprofessionalbaseball.com.
