Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Frisco exploded for eight seventh-inning runs and Alec Asher evened his record at 11-11 as the RoughRiders held off Corpus Christi 8-5 Thursday before 5,704 at Whataburger Field.
Asher fell behind 2-0 in the second but went on to retire 13 of the last 15 hitters he faced, including nine straight. The Polk State (Fla.) product allowed three hits, a walk and struck out five.
Francisco Mendoza had a crack at his eighth save, but failed to work the required three frames and close the ninth as the Hooks scored three unearned runs. Rene Garcia's two-run double off just-inserted Joseph Ortiz was the Hooks' last gasp. Ortiz got pinch-hitter Telvin Nash - the tying run - on an infield fly to notch his first save.
Hooks starter Brady Rodgers (5-12) was challenged in the first, but came away unharmed after working around singles by Odubel Herrera and Joey Gallo.
Corpus Christi's Conrad Gregor belted a two-run homer over the right-field bullpen. Teoscar Hernandez's double to left initiated two-out trouble for the RoughRiders.
Frisco scored for the first time in 40 innings against a starting pitcher while sending 12 men to bat in an eight-hit seventh. J.T. Wise opened by doubling and Nomar Mazara plated him with a single to right. Jorge Alfaro's two-run homer to left snapped an 0-for-11 series slump and powered Frisco on top.
Herrera added an RBI double to chase Rodgers after 6 2/3. Houston's third-round 2012 pick struck out a season-best seven and allowed five runs on eight hits.
Trever Adams rudely welcomed Matt Heidenreich, his run-scoring single extending the Frisco lead to three. The RoughRiders weren't done, Wise's three-run yard shot to left blowing the contest open.
Hooks third baseman Colin Moran has an eight-game hitting streak.
Kyle Smith (4-5) pitches for the Hooks Friday at 7:10 against Jerad Eickhoff (10-8) in the series finale. Bud Light presents Friday Fireworks postgame.
