Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Four players from the Hillcats' 2014 Opening Day roster have been selected to participate in the prestigious Arizona Fall League. Current Hillcats relief pitcher Nate Hyatt joins former Hillcats Kyle Wren, Brandon Cunniff and Daniel Castro on the roster for the Peoria Javelinas.

The six-team league begins its season on October 7 and concludes on November 13. Established in 1992, the Arizona Fall League has seen nearly 60 percent of its alumni make it to the Majors, including 12 MVPs, four Cy Young Award winners and three World Series MVPs.

Last year's team leader in saves, Hyatt currently boasts a 4-3 record this season with a 2.85 ERA. His 10.20 strikeout per nine innings ratio ranks third among relievers in the Carolina League. The right-hander has gone multiple innings in nine of his last 10 appearances and allowed only two earned runs over his last 18.1 frames.

Wren, who played center field in all but one game in the first half of the season, earned the Carolina League "Top Star" Award in the 2014 All-Star Game prior to being promoted to Double-A Mississippi. Wren finished the first half ranked second on the circuit in both hits and stolen bases with 77 and 31, respectively, trailing only his teammate and fellow All-Star Jose Peraza in each category. Wren's .296 batting average placed him in the top 10 of the Carolina League at the time of his promotion. Wren is hitting .262 with 10 doubles and 11 stolen bases at Mississippi.

Brandon Cunniff assumed the closer role for the Hillcats early in the 2014 campaign and was a perfect 3-for-3 in save opportunities before being transferred to Double-A Mississippi. Cunniff did not allow an earned run in 15.2 innings with Lynchburg and struck out 21 batters in that time. With the M-Braves, Cunniff sports a 3-0 record with a 2.13 ERA. He has logged 48 strikeouts in 50.2 innings at the next level.

Daniel Castro posted a .292 batting average with the Hillcats until he was called up to Mississippi on June 28. Castro was the everyday shortstop for the squad and racked up 16 doubles, three triples and 34 RBIs while only committing seven errors in 70 contests. In Mississippi, his average sits at .277 with nine doubles, three home runs and 19 RBIs in 47 contests.

Lynchburg currently leads the Northern Division Wild Card race by one game with five days remaining in the regular season. The Hillcats finish the regular-season slate with five more road games, beginning with a 7 p.m. first pitch at the Carolina Mudcats tonight.
