Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, MD -The Frederick Keys are pleased to announce that Michael Burgess has been named a postseason Carolina League All-Star. This season's end of year All-Star squad was announced this morning by the Carolina League Office. It marks the third time in his career that Burgess has been named to a CL midseason or postseason all-star roster. As a member of the Potomac Nationals, Burgess won midseason accolades in 2009 and 2010.

One of the Carolina League's top hitters in 2014, Burgess, 25, hit .315 over 83 games with Frederick, and still qualifies as the circuit's leader in batting average. Promoted to the Double-A Bowie Baysox on July 22, the Tampa native slugged 15 home runs for the Keys to go along with 68 RBIs, 32 doubles and four triples. At the time of his promotion, Burgess placed first in RBIs, doubles, extra-base hits (51), total bases (186) and intentional walks (four). He was also tied for second in home runs as well as third in batting average and hits (101).

Burgess' best month of the season came in June, when he was recognized as the league's "Player of the Month." Over 23 games, he hit .371 with nine home runs, three triples and seven doubles while he drove in 23 runs. Ending June with a league-best 73 total bases, Burgess also tallied more extra-base hits (19) than anyone in the eight-team loop, and posted the CL's best slugging percentage (.820)

Limited to only seven games at Double-A, Burgess was placed on the Baysox disabled list on August 2. Signed by the Orioles as a free agent this February, the Floridian signed with Baltimore after spending the 2013 season with the Corpus Christi Hooks, the Double-A affiliate of the Houston Astros.

Former Myrtle Beach third baseman Joey Gallo was named the league's "Player of the Year" while Wilmington starting pitcher Glenn Sparkman received "Pitcher of the Year" honors. The "Manager of the Year" award went to Tripp Keister of Potomac.

The Frederick Keys continue their series with the Salem Red Sox on Thursday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Sebastian Vader (2-4, 4.71) makes the start for the Keys and will be countered by Red Sox lefty Cody Kukuk (4-6, 4.92). First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source. It is 50 cent Hot Dog Night at the Park, as well as Breast Cancer Awareness night, and the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a breast cancer awareness bracelet or visor courtesy of Seagrams Escapes.
