Kernels Walk-Off in Series Opener
August 28, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Kane County Cougars News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa- In the Cougars' last five trips to Cedar Rapids, three games have gone into extra innings and four games have been decided by one run. Wednesday night was no different as the Kernels (41-24, 72-63) walked off in the bottom of the 11th inning by a score of 3-2 over the Cougars (43-22, 88-47).
Jonathon Hinojosa connected on the walk-off hit to plate Tanner Vavra in the 11th frame, but the Cougars and Kernels both used clutch relief and defense to continue the ballgame tied at 2.
Francisco Carrillo took the mound in the ninth inning and dug himself a hole with runners at second and third with only one out. With the outfield playing in, Hinojosa flied out to center field as Trey Martin slid forward to make the catch. Vavra attempted to tag and score from third, but Martin's one-hopper to Victor Caratini gunned down the base runner at the plate.
The Cougars' best chance came in the top of the tenth with two on and one out. Shawon Dunston Jr. ripped a line drive that was stopped by a diving Engelb Vielma at short stop. Vielma tagged second for the force out and tagged out Carlos Penalver in a rundown.
Jeimer Candelario put the Cougars on top with an RBI double in the opening frame
That lead was short lived as Jen-Ho Tseng suffered up a solo home run to Hinojosa in the bottom of the first. Tseng went on to allow only one more hit the rest of his six inning performance. Despite his eighth quality start of the season, Tseng was denied of his first win in over a month.
Josue Montanez (2-4) picked up the win as Michael Wagner (3-3) suffered the loss.
The series continues on Thursday with a pitching matchup of left-hander Tyler Ihrig (2-1, 2.53) against Cedar Rapids' Chih-Wei Hu (7-1, 1.94). First pitch from Perfect Game Field is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. The game can be heard on AM 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com.
