-PINCKNEY DIVISION CHAMPION SPIKES RETURN HOME: The State College Spikes captured their second consecutive New York-Penn League Pinckney Division title with a victory over the Jamestown Jammers on Saturday, and tonight, they begin their final homestand of the regular season with the first game of a two-game mini-series against the Williamsport Crosscutters at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Spikes became the first NYPL team to clinch a playoff berth with their win on Saturday, and will await their opponent in the NYPL Semifinal Series starting on Wednesday, September 3, with sites and times to be determined. The Spikes are 6-2 against the Crosscutters this year, and have won every meeting at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. All-time, State College and Williamsport have each won 52 of 104 games against each other, and each is 29-23 at home.

-LAST GAME: Nick Thompson and Danny Diekroeger drove in two runs apiece to lead the offense as the State College Spikes defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 6-2, on Tuesday night at Eastwood field.

With the win and the Tri-City ValleyCats' loss on Tuesday, the Spikes are now tied with the ValleyCats for the second seed in the New York-Penn League playoffs with six games remaining in the regular season. Both teams are two games back of Hudson Valley for the best record in the league.

Diekroeger, who delivered two doubles to extend his franchise-record hitting streak to 20 games, opened the scoring by driving in a pair of runs in the third inning. In the sixth, Thompson increased his RBI total on the season to 41 with a two-run single. State College then plated two more runs in the eighth inning on Brian O'Keefe's single and Brett Wiley's groundout.

Robelys Reyes scored two runs for the Spikes and reached base three times on two walks and a time hit by pitch.

Dewin Perez earned the win for State College by starting and yielding two runs on six hits and two walks over five-plus innings of work. Perez also struck out three batters in the victory.

-GOMBER GETS START FOR SPIKES: Left-hander Austin Gomber makes his 10th start as a professional for the Spikes tonight. Last time out, Gomber yielded three runs on eight hits and two walks over four innings of work. The Florida Atlantic product was selected in the fourth round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Cardinals, and has made seven of his 10 starts on the year at home. Gomber is allowing leadoff hitters to hit .355 and reach base at a .412 clip against him, but is allowing just a .229 average with runners in scoring position. The southpaw's longest outing of the year was a five-inning start at Lowell on August 8.

-ARTEAGA HEADS TO HILL FOR CROSSCUTTERS: Right-hander Alejandro Arteaga makes his 13th start for Williamsport in tonight's game. Arteaga faced the Spikes twice earlier this year, logging a total of 12 innings but allowing 11 runs, six of them earned, in a pair of losses. The native Venezuelan has lost six straight decisions despite three quality starts (six innings or more, three earned runs or less) during that span. Arteaga gave up one run on five hits and struck out a season-high eight over six innings against Mahoning Valley last time out, but did not factor into the decision.

-STONE NAMED NYPL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Spikes infielder Jake Stone was honored as the New York-Penn League Player of the Week for the week ending August 24. Stone went 8-for-21 with four doubles, a home run and nine runs batted in from August 18-24, helping propel the Spikes offense as they clinched their second consecutive New York-Penn League Pinckney Division title. The Tennessee Wesleyan product delivered five RBI in the Spikes' pennant-clinching game at Jamestown on Saturday.

-RUNNING INTO THE RECORD BOOKS: Thanks to additions and changes to the box score after Saturday's game, the Spikes set a new club record for stolen bases in a single game as they went 7-for-7 on the basepaths against Jamestown on Saturday. Darren Seferina also set a new Spikes record with four steals in the contest.

-SPIKES, CARDINALS EXTEND PDC THROUGH 2016: The State College Spikes have announced a two-year extension of their Player Development Contract (PDC) with the defending National League champion St. Louis Cardinals. The extension maintains the affiliation between the Spikes and Cardinals through the 2016 New York-Penn League season.

-SPIKE MARKS: The Spikes lead the NYPL in batting average at .268, runs scored at 367, run differential at +114, and home runs at 52, with Tri-City placing second in all but run differential (Hudson Valley +61)...Kyle Grana's 13.38 strikeouts per nine innings are the second-most among NYPL relievers, and his 56 total whiffs are tied for fifth-most in the league...Will Anderson is also tied for fifth in the NYPL in strikeouts at 56, and his 2.52 ERA is fifth-best in the loop..Darren Seferina is now fourth in the NYPL in batting average at .303, 16 points back of Batavia's Mason Davis...State College has not been out of first place in the division since July 1
