Rio Grande Valley Sol Join the X-League

August 27, 2014 - X-League (X-League) News Release

(Palm Harbor, FL) | The X-League welcomes the Rio Grande Valley Sol franchise, making it the ninth and newest member for the upcoming 2015 season. Led by owner Jennifer Andrews, the Sol will be entering it's second season after playing it's inaugural season in the Lone Star Football League (LSFL). With each passing week, the X-League Indoor Football League continues to expand.

"I am very excited about the move into the X-League this season," said Andrews. "After speaking with (X-League Commissioner) Michael Mink, the X-League's vision and direction as a league were an ideal fit for the Sol." The addition of the Sol to the X-League will renew a rivalry with the newly added Corpus Christi Fury. The interstate rivalry battle between the two indoor football cities dates back to the AF2.

Recently the Corpus Christi Fury and the Florida Tarpons left the UIFL for the X-League. At the end of July, the Cape Fear Heroes announced they were coming to the X-League from the AIF.

"The addition of Rio Grande is another piece of the puzzle as we work towards building the X- League into the premier indoor football league in the country," said Mink. "Jennifer is an owner who put together a highly competitive team in a market that had been without indoor football for quite some time. As an owner she and her team were active in the community and were a game away from capturing the title in their first season."

The Rio Grande Valley Sol play out of the 5,500 seat State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas. The Sol strive to deliver greater entertainment to fans with a superior game day experience. The Rio Grande Valley region encompasses cities like McAllen, Edinburg, Harlingen and Brownsville, many of which are home to avid sports fans.

The X-League is set up to be ultra-competitive, with five of its nine teams having played in its League's Championship Game in 2014. In addition to the contest between Corpus Christi Fury and the Florida Tarpons in the UIFL, the St. Louis Attack played the Florida Marine Raiders in the X-League Championship, and the Cape Fear Heroes played in the AIF Championship. The Sol finished the 2014 season with a record of 8-4 as a member of the Lone Star Football League.

"The league is shaping up to have some fantastic organizations for 2015," said Mink. "The addition of Rio Grande brings us an organization that has outstanding fans and had great success on the field in their first season."

The X-League is still reviewing expansion applications as well as communicating with additional established teams about joining the existing nine teams that make up the X-league. The current line-up of teams is expected to grow further as we get closer to the 2015 X-League Season.
