Cats Drop Series Opener in Sioux City

SIOUX CITY, IA- The Gary South Shore RailCats fell to the Sioux City Explorers on Tuesday night by a final score of 8-6.

In the bottom of the second, Dillon Usiak doubled home Tommy Mendonca to get Sioux City on the board. The Explorers plated four more runs in the third as Peter Barrows drove home a pair with a base hit. After Andres Perez grounded out to score a run, Amos Ramon singled to score another and put Sioux City ahead 5-0.

Wally Backman walked to lead off the fifth inning and Drew Muren homered to cut into the Explorers' lead, making it 5-2. An error by Tim Colwell allowed two runs to score in the sixth and extend the inning. This gave Danny Pulfer and Drew Martinez the chance to each drive in a run of their own, making it four unearned runs in the inning to give the Cats a 6-5 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Cats' starter Stephen Bougher allowed a walk and a double, forcing Greg Tagert to bring Ethan Gibbons out of the bullpen. Michael Lang doubled home a run and a wild pitch from Gibbons brought another in. Oscar Mesa provided an RBI double to cap the inning off, giving the Explorers an 8-6 advantage.

Sioux City's bullpen finished strong, allowing no earned runs 3.1 innings pitched between Kenny Long and Alex Burnett to finish the game. Long was credited with the win for the Explorers and Burnett earned the save. Muren led the way offensively with his seventh home run of the year. Zac Mitchell added two hits while Pulfer and Martinez each had an RBI. The RailCats and Explorers play game two of the series at 7:05 on Wednesday night.
