Aces Drop Omaha from First Place

Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

Reno, NV - A.J. Pollock drove in the game-winning run to finish off a three-run seventh inning as Reno rallied to down Omaha, 7-6, Tuesday night in the third of four meetings at Aces Ballpark. The Storm Chasers have dropped all three games in the series to fall to 71-66 and one game behind the Oklahoma City RedHawks in the American Conference North Division with six games remaining in the regular season.

Omaha starter Buddy Baumann issued three walks and hit a batter in the first two innings but was able to navigate his way out of jams in each frame before Danny Dorn belted a solo home run in the fourth to put the Aces on top, 1-0. It was just the fourth long ball allowed by the left-hander in 83 innings this season and the first he has yielded to a lefty swinger in his nearly two full seasons at the Triple-A level.

The Storm Chasers were held without a hit through the first four frames before they got to Mike Bolsinger in the fifth for four two-out markers on a run-scoring hit by Paul Janish, a two-run double from Whit Merrifield that snapped an 0-for-15 drought and RBI triple by Paulo Orlando. The hosts responded right away as Bobby Wilson led off the bottom of the inning with a home run, his third of the year and the first time that Baumann had allowed multiple round-trippers in an appearance. Reno got the contest knotted up later in the inning on a run-producing double by Chris Owings and a sacrifice fly from Pollock, both of whom are playing on major league rehabilitation assignments. Baumann was charged with those four runs on four hits and a season-high four free passes over his five innings of work.

Jess Todd took opened the sixth on the mound for the Aces and surrendered a solo shot to Carlos Peguero, his 29th of the season, that put the visitors back on top, 5-4. Cheslor Cuthbert then walked, moved to second base on an infield hit by Brett Hayes and scored on another Janish single to make it a two-run spread. Christian Binford inherited the lead and retired the side in order in the home half but could not get through the seventh and wound up suffering the defeat. A lead-off walk, an error and a base hit filled the bases for Andy Marte, who singled to right to drive in a pair to get the game squared at six. Pollock followed with his base hit to knock in Owings with the decisive run and drive Binford from the hill after the young right-hander had surrendered three runs and three hits over his 1 1/3 innings. Louis Coleman issued a walk to reload the bases with one out but escaped further damage by getting a strike out and ground out to end the threat.

Kevin Munson came on to set down the Chasers in order in the eighth before Jake Barrett did the same in the ninth, as the Aces improved to a remarkable 67-1 when leading after seven innings and stayed within one game of Sacramento in the Pacific Conference North. The two teams will conclude the season with five head-to-head matchups to determine the division winner.

The road trip and series wrap up Wednesday night with Omaha's starter to be determined while Reno right-hander Charles Brewer gets the starting assignment. Coverage of the game gets underway at 8:45 pm and can be heard locally on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
