Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk, VA - Four Norfolk pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Tides blanked the Charlotte Knights 3-0 in front of 6,209 fans Tuesday night at Harbor Park.
Suk-min Yoon, Miguel Chalas, Preston Guilmet and Evan Meek combined on the gem as Norfolk snapped a season-high four-game losing skid. The quartet walked six and struck out nine to help the Tides move into second place in the IL South division.
Chalas (1-0) was very impressive in earning the win in his Triple-A debut, as he allowed one hit and three walks over four innings of relief. The 22-year-old, who was promoted from Class-A Frederick Tuesday, struck out four in his first career outing above the Class-A level.
Meek worked a perfect ninth inning to register his 15th save of the season. It was the 12th consecutive scoreless appearance for the right-hander, who lowered his season ERA to 1.99 in the win.
The Tides got all the offense they would need in the fifth frame, as they strung together five hits to plate three runs off of Charlotte starter Andre Rienzo (1-4). Dariel Alvarez started the scoring with an RBI double, and one out later Christian Walker and Henry Urrutia followed with RBI singles to give the Tides a 3-0 advantage.
Alvarez finished with two hits in the contest, extending his hitting streak to 15 games - Norfolk's longest of the season. Over that stretch, Alvarez has batted .464 (13-28) with seven RBI, and his 15-game run is six games shy of matching the longest in the International League this season.
The Tides wrap up their season series with the Knights Wednesday afternoon at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 12:05. UVA product Tyler Wilson (3-2, 3.57) will make the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Bobby Doran (5-1, 5.36).
Notes: Miguel Chalas became the 54th different player to appear for the Tides this year...Norfolk did not homer in the contest, leaving the Tides with four home runs through 24 games in August...16 of the 20 games between the Tides and Knights this season have been decided by three runs or less...The win was Norfolk's fifth shutout of the season... Suk-min Yoon, who was making his first start since July 19, struck out three in three inning of work...Christian Walker had two hits and an RBI to extend his organizational lead in runs batted in to 93.
