Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (85-51) had their 10-game win streak snapped with a 4-1 loss to the Reading Fightin Phils (60-76) Tuesday night at Hadlock Field. The loss marked just the sixth in 20 games against the Fightin Phils this season.
The game began scoreless across the first six innings before Reading jumped in front against Eduardo Rodriguez in the seventh.
KC Serna picked up a single with two down to spark the rally. The shortstop then went first to third on Zach Collier's single and scored on a Rodriguez slider, which bounced in the dirt for a wild pitch, making it 1-0 Reading.
Mike McCarthy took over in the eighth for the 'Dogs and was greeted by an Albert Cartwright bunt, on which McCarthy threw the ball away and allowed the runner to go to second. A groundout pushed the runner to third and a sacrifice fly by Peter Lavin doubled the Reading lead to 3-0.
Rodriguez (5-8) worked the first seven innings and gave up the one run on seven hits; he did not walk a batter and struck out seven. On the other side of the mound it was Ryan O'Sullivan that kept the Sea Dogs out of the run column for the first seven innings.
Colton Murray took over in the eighth and was greeted by a solo home run off the bat of Sean Coyle on the first pitch of the inning. His 15th blast landed barely fair over the Maine Monster and cut the Portland deficit in half at 2-1.
Reading responded against McCarthy with another run two runs in the top of the ninth. Aaron Altherr led off the inning with a double and scored two batters later on Serna's single to right. Edgar Duran grounded into a 5-4 fielder's choice and plated Serna from third, giving Reading the 4-1 lead.
O'Sullivan (6-8) worked the first seven in scoreless fashion and allowed six hits, walked one and struck out six. Murray gave up just the one run in his lone inning and Matt Hoffman earned his third save of the year with a perfect ninth.
The 'Dogs and Phils get set for game three of the four game series Wednesday night at 7:00 PM from Hadlock Field. Portland is slated to send RHP Keith Couch (8-1, 2.69) to the hill against Reading's LHP Adam Loewen (2-5, 3.18). Radio coverage begins at 6:40 PM on the WPEI U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network. MiLB.TV coverage begins at 6:55 PM.
