Shorebirds Game Notes at Greensboro

PREVIEW: The Shorebirds dropped the series finale to the Asheville Tourists, 6-3 on Sunday eve- ning. The game remained tied 2-2 going into the eighth inning before the Tourists took the lead for good on an RBI single by Raimel Tapia. Delmarva travels to Greensboro, needing to win 6 of their last 7 to finish over .500 for the season.

TODAY'S OPPONENT: Sean Townsley will start the series opener for the Greensboro Grasshop- pers on Tuesday evening. Townsley has been one of the best starters in the entire league, going 6-2 with a 2.15 ERA in 92 innings. The left-hander has also recorded three saves for the Grass- hoppers. Townsley has pitched three times against Delmarva, most recently pitching seven shutout innings on July 15th.

19TH SEASON: The 2014 season marks the 19th season of Shorebirds baseball on the Eastern Shore and 18th straight year as a Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The Shorebirds' first season was 1996 as a Montreal Expos farm team.

ORIOLES WATCH: The Baltimore Orioles brought the home run bats to their series opener with the Tampa Bay Rays. Nick Markakis and Steve Pearce went back-to-back, before Delmon Young, J.J. Hardy and Chris Davis hit three consecutive home runs. The O's won 9-1, maintaining a six game lead in the AL East.

RACE FOR A BATTING TITLE: Two Shorebirds are in the running for the league batting title at year's end. Chance Sisco (.335) and Drew Dosch (.318) are both in the top 6 in the South Atlantic League among qualifying hitters in batting average. Willians Astudillo leads the league with a .339 batting average, four points ahead of Sisco in second place. On Sunday, Sisco went 1-for-4 while Astudillo went 1-for-3.

The Shorebirds' Opening Day starter was pro- moted to the Frederick Keys last week, tossing six shutout innings in his Carolina League debut. The left-hander leads Delmarva with nine wins. Brault leads the league in WHIP at 1.04, and he is 2nd in opponents' batting average (.227) and 4th in strikeouts (115). His 3.05 ERA ranks 6th in SAL.

WHO'S HOT - ANTHONY CARONIA

The Shorebirds' second baseman went 4-for- 5 on Saturday night, raising his batting aver- age to .364 on the season. Caronia does not have enough at-bats to qualify for a batting title, having missed 7 weeks due to injury.

WHO ELSE - GREGORY LORENZO

The Shorebirds outfielder swiped another base on Saturday night, now 42 steals on the season. With 40 steals with Delmarva in 2013, and 6 in 2012, Lorenzo is the franchise record holder with 88 career stolen bases.
