Red Sox Recall Carlos Rivero from Pawtucket

August 26, 2014 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

The Boston Red Sox today placed shortstop Xander Bogaerts on the seven-day concussion disabled list (retroactive to August 23). To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, infielder Carlos Rivero was selected to the active major league roster from Triple-A Pawtucket. Wearing No. 72, Rivero will be active for tonight's series opener in Toronto against the Blue Jays at 7:07 p.m.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Bogaerts, 21, was removed from Friday night's game against the Mariners at Fenway Park after being hit in the head by a pitch from Seattle's Felix Hernandez. In 118 games for the Red Sox this season, Bogaerts has hit .223 (97-for-435) with 22 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 30 RBI, and 47 runs scored. Entering play today, he leads all American League rookies in games played, while also ranking second in walks, tied for third in doubles, and fourth in hits and runs scored. Defensively, he has played 73 games for Boston at shortstop and 44 at third base. Bogaerts entered 2014, his first full big league season, rated as the No. 2 overall prospect in baseball according to Baseball America.

For Rivero, 26, this marks the first major league stint of his career. Signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent last December, he has split the 2014 season between Double-A Portland and Pawtucket. In 105 games combined between the two clubs, Rivero has batted .264 (103-for-390) with 20 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 53 RBI, and 46 runs scored, while appearing at third base (50 games), left field (23), and shortstop (17). He has hit .286 (78-for-273) with a .341 on-base percentage in 74 games with the PawSox this season, including a .299 average (72-for-241) since the start of June. For his minor league career, the Venezuelan native is a .262 hitter with 207 doubles, nine triples, 69 home runs, and 462 RBI in 999 games. He was originally signed by the Cleveland Indians as an international free agent in 2005.
