Today's Game
Tonight, the Bisons host the Pawtucket Red Sox for the third game of a four-game series at Coca-Cola Field (7:05 p.m.). The Bisons have won five straight, including wins of 15-2 and 10-6 in the first two games of their series with the PawSox. The Herd is 25-9 in its last 34 games.
Playoff Race
The Bisons and PawSox are in a virtual tie for the IL's lone wild card spot with the Herd up .001 in percentage points. Buffalo has one more game (9) than Pawtucket (8) on the schedule with a doubleheader Wednesday in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Both the Bisons and the PawSox are just 3.5 games back of Syracuse for 1st place in the IL North.
Red-Hot Herd
The Bisons have scored 11, 15 and 10 in their last three wins, marking the first time the club has scored 10+ runs in three straight at Coca-Cola Field. The team is 16-7 so far in August, having scored nearly twice as many runs as they've allowed this month (110-60). The club's five home runs yesterday were a new season-high.
Brad Mills
LHP BRAD MILLS will make his fifth Bisons start today. The southpaw allowed just two runs over six innings in a no-decision last Wednesday against Rochester. Mills has struck out five and walked none in each of his last three starts. He's held opponents to a .239 average with Buffalo.
Brett Wallace
INF BRETT WALLACE became just the third player to ever hit a walk-off grand slam at Coca-Cola Field, joining OF Fernando Martinez ("12) and Marcos Scutaro ("99). He's the 10th player in the modern era to hit three homers in a game and has the Herd's second six-RBI performance in 2014, joining C Erik Kratz who drove in six on June 28 in Syracuse.
Starting Strong
Bisons starters have posted a 2.29 ERA over the first 23 games in August. As a group, the rotation has allowed just 106 hits while striking out 115 batters in 133.2 innings of work. The Herd now sports a 3.49 ERA for the season, best in the International League.
Bisons Bits
OF DALTON POMPEY has hit .429 (6-14) with a doubles, two RBI, three steals and four runs in his first three Triple-A games...RHP KYLE DRABEK returns to the Bisons after two scoreless efforts out of the Blue Jays bullpen...OF KEVIN PILLAR has 39 doubles, the 2nd most by a Bisons player in the modern era (INF Jhonny Peralta, 44, 2004).
Blue Jays Update
The Blue Jays (66-64) lost 2-1 in 10 innings to Tampa on Sunday. Former Bison RHP Drew Hutchison struck out seven and allowed just one run in six innings. Toronto welcomes Boston into town with a 7:07 p.m. start tonight.
