Omaha's Lead Down to One After Aces Walk-Off Win

Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

Reno, NV - Danny Dorn delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Reno to a 5-4 walk-off win over Omaha Sunday night in the opener of a four-game set at Aces Ballpark. The Storm Chasers slipped to 71-64 and saw their lead over the victorious Oklahoma City RedHawks in the American Conference North Division trimmed to a game with eight remaining while the Aces pulled to within a game of Sacramento in the Pacific Conference North.

Omaha's Chris Dwyer struck out both hitters he faced to close the eighth inning but gave up singles to Ronny Cedeno and Roger Kieschnick to open the decisive frame before Bobby Wilson dropped down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Nick Ahmed was intentionally passed to load the bases for Dorn, who sent the first pitch he saw deep enough to center field to chase home Cedeno with the winning run.

The Storm Chasers tallied in the first inning for a third straight night and for the ninth time in their last 13 games after Johnny Giavotella doubled with two outs and scored when Carlos Peguero followed with a two-base hit. Francisco Pena then crunched a two-run homer, his 27th of the season, to make it a three-run frame against Reno starter Andrew Chafin. The Aces got a run back in the home half on a John Lamb wild pitch that scored Ahmed with two outs.

Chafin then put the clamps on the visitors, holding them to two hits over the next five frames and finished his six innings of work allowing those three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out three. Giavotella's second double of the night leading off in the sixth was his 109th in an Omaha uniform, which moved him into third place in franchise history. The hosts then played long ball in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-3 lead on a solo shot by Andy Marte and a two-run clout by Mike Jacobs off of Lamb, who was tagged for the four runs, three earned, on four hits and four walks over his five-plus innings.

Brian Bocock greeted Reno reliever Zeke Spruill with a single to start the seventh, advanced to second base on a Terrance Gore sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a ground out and scored to tie the game at four on a base hit by Pedro Ciriaco, who began his career in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization.

The series continues Monday night with Omaha right-hander Clay Mortensen taking the hill against Reno right-hander Bradin Hagens. Coverage of the game gets underway at 8:45 pm and can be heard locally on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
