Sacramento River Cats News Release

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Sacramento River Cats (75-61) were routed by the Nashville Sounds (74-61) by a score of 14-2 on Sunday night at Herschel Greer Stadium.

Nashville got the scoring started after plating a run in the top of the second inning on shortstop Pete Orr's RBI-single that put the Sounds up 1-0.

Sacramento would take a 2-1 lead in top of the fourth inning behind an RBI-double by left fielder Shane Peterson and an RBI-single off the bat of third baseman Alden Carrithers.

The Cats' lead did not last long however, as the Sounds notched two runs of their own in the bottom half of the fourth. Third baseman Jason Rogers tripled to lead off the inning and then scored on a groundout by designated hitter Hunter Morris. Left fielder Sean Halton then added his seventh home run of the season, a solo-bomb to left field that put Nashville up 3-2.

The sounds scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead to 4-2 and then exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the seventh to put the game out of reach. The eight-run seventh put Nashville up 12-2 and was highlighted by a three-run home run by first baseman Matt Clark and a three-run blast by right fielder Jeremy Hermida.

Nashville tacked on two more runs in the eighth to make it a 14-2 game.

Right-handed starter Angel Castro (9-8, 4.46 ERA) received the loss for Sacramento after giving up seven runs - six earned - on 11 hits and one walk while striking out two in six innings of work. Lefty Joe Savery recorded only one out and gave up two runs on one hit and one walk while right-handed pitcher Tucker Healy yielded five runs on four hits and two walks in 1.2 innings.

Sounds starter Michael Blazek (4-4, 4.05 ERA) tossed 6.1 innings and allowed just two runs on three hits and two walks to go with a strikeout in his fourth win of the season.

Peterson was one of few bright spots for the River Cats offense, finishing 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run, and an RBI. Carrithers turned in a 2-for-4 performance with an RBI.

The Sounds had six batters account for at least two hits including Clark who finished 2-for-4 with three runs, a home run, and three RBI, and Hermida who ended up 2-for-3 with two runs, a homer, and three RBI. Morris added a 3-for-5 night at the plate with a run and three RBI.

On Monday, in game two of the four-game set, the River Cats will send righty Zach Neal (6-7, 4.53 ERA) to the mound opposite Sounds right-hander Ariel Pena (9-7, 4.18 ERA with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m. (PT) at Herschel Greer Stadium.

The River Cats return home to Raley Field for their final regular season homestand of the season on Thursday, Aug. 28, when they will host their I-80 rivals, the Reno Aces in a five-game set that concludes on Monday, Sept. 1.
