Red Sox Recall Heath Hembree from Pawtucket

The Boston Red Sox today recalled right-handed pitcher Heath Hembree from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman was optioned to Pawtucket. Hembree (wearing No. 37), will be available for this afternoon's series finale against the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park beginning at 1:35 p.m.
Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.
For Hembree, 25, this is his second stint with the Red Sox this season. On July 26, he was acquired from the San Francisco Giants along with left-handed pitcher Edwin Escobar in exchange for Jake Peavy and cash consdierations. Recalled on August 5, he made one appearance for Boston, throwing a career-high 4.0 scoreless innings in a 19-inning road game against the Angels on August 9. After the game, he was optioned back to Pawtucket, where he has appeared in four games, going 0-1 with one save and a 4.15 ERA (2 ER/4.1 IP). Between San Francisco's Triple-A Fresno affiliate and the PawSox this season, he has gone 1-4, with 19 saves, a 3.92 ERA (19 ER/43.2 IP), 18 walks, and 52 strikeouts in 46 games. A 2014 Pacific Coast League mid-season All-Star, Hembree entered this season as the No. 7 overall prospect in the Giants organization according to Baseball America. In his major league career between the Giants (2013) and Red Sox, he has made 10 scoreless appearances, all in relief (11.2 IP).
Workman, 26, is 1-8 with a 4.93 ERA (40 ER/73.0 IP), 28 walks, and 56 strikeouts in 16 outings this season over three stints with the Red Sox, including 12 starts. He suffered the loss yesterday after allowing seven runs on 10 hits in a 3.1-inning start. Over two stints with Pawtucket this season, the right-hander has a 6-1 record and a 4.45 ERA (27 ER/54.2 IP). The native of Arlington, TX was signed by the Red Sox as a second-round selection in the 2010 June Draft.
