Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers used a four-run first inning to take the rubber match of their weekend series against the River City Rascals, with a 5-4 victory at All Pro Freight Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The win for the Crushers (51-35) scored their eighth consecutive series victory, and they have only lost one series since the All-Star Break, while the loss for the Rascals (53-34) was just their second series loss since the All-Star Break.

Lake Erie scored four times in the bottom of the first inning to set the tone early on, and never looked back. River City battled back in the final three innings, and they had the tying run on in the final two frames, but could not cash in.

The big first inning began with a walk issued to Craig Hertler, and five consecutive hits followed. Trevor Stevens followed with a single to right-center, and Andrew Davis singled to center to score the first run. Anderson Hidalgo followed Davis with a RBI single to center, and Vince Mejia doubled in Davis before Ryan Hutchison capped the inning with a RBI single.

The Rascals never really went away. They scored their first run in the top of the fourth inning. Saxon Butler started the inning with a double, and made his way to third on Joe Staley's groundout before scoring on Brian McConkey's sacrifice fly.

Lake Erie responded with one final run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and did so with two outs. Adam Ford stroked a one out single, before stealing second and third. With two outs, Craig Hertler delivered his 15th hit of the year with runners in scoring position and two out, as he delivered a clutch, two-out single to center to score Ford.

River City plated another run in the top of the seventh inning, before clawing a little closer with two more in the eighth. Jon Myers tripled in the seventh and scored on Curran Redal's sacrifice fly. Brian McConkey drove in the first of two runs in the eighth on a RBI double, and Steve Carillo's two-out single scored McConkey later in the inning.

The Rascals had the tying run on third in the eighth but Brad Zambron (2) hammered retired Eric Williams on a groundout to end the inning. In the ninth, the Rascals had the tying run on first with two outs, when Zambron retired McConkey on a groundout to end the game.

Connor Whalen (3-2) scored the victory for Lake Erie, after allowing just four runs on nine hits over 7.1 innings of action. Zambron tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in relief and scored the save. Bryce Shafer (2-2) was unable to make it out of the second inning, allowing four runs on six hits over one inning of work and took the loss.

All but one Crusher hit safely on the afternoon, while four Crushers hit safely multiple times. Ford led the way for the Crushers with three hits, going 3-for-4 with a trio of singles. Hertler and Stevens both went 2-for-4, and Mejia went 2-for-3 with a walk.

The Crushers are off on Monday but will begin a three-game series with the Normal Cornbelters at the Corn Crib in Normal, Ill., on Tuesday night. Righty Jason Wilson (7-5, 2.78) will start for the Crushers. The first pitch is scheduled for 8:05 PM.
