Yankees Sweep Blue Jays, Win 5th Straight

August 24, 2014 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Tampa Yankees News Release

TAMPA - The Tampa Yankees (35-28) completed a three-game sweep of the Dunedin Blue Jays (29-34) with a 5-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The Yankees have now won five games in a row.

Brady Lail (2-1) followed up a six inning no-hit performance last week with a quality start on Sunday. The right-hander yielded one run on five hits in six innings of work, walking two while striking out a pair.

The Yankees took advantage of a shaky Taylor Cole in the first inning. Cole's first pitch hit Mark Payton on the right hip before Cito Culver drew a four-pitch walk. A wild pitch then sent the runners to second and third. One out later, Aaron Judge sent a two-run single into center.

Danny Oh led off the second with a slap single into left field and stole second base on the very next pitch to Kyle Higashioka. Oh later scored on a two-out single to left by Culver, giving Tampa a 3-0 lead.

Lail surrendered the only Dunedin run in the fifth. Kevin Patterson led off with a ground-rule double and advanced on a single by Mitch Nay. Emilio Guerrero later plated Patterson with a sacrifice fly.

Cole (8-8) allowed three runs on five hits in six innings. The righty walked one and struck out six in the loss for the Blue Jays.

Tampa added a couple of insurance runs off the Dunedin bullpen in the later innings. Oh singled and advanced on a double by Higashioka in the seventh before Payton delivered an RBI sac-fly. Eric Jagielo drew a walk to begin the eighth and later scored on a single to right by Mike Ford.

RHPs Philip Walby, Kyle Haynes and Caleb Cotham each threw one inning of relief for Tampa, combining to scatter two hits and strike out three in three scoreless frames.

Judge, Ford and Oh each went 2-for-4. Oh scored twice as Judge picked up two RBI. Culver went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run and an RBI. Ford also drove in a run and is now hitting .375 since joining Tampa last week.

Following an off day on Monday, the playoff push continues for Tampa as the Clearwater Threshers visit on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. game.
