Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
Jake Laber's time finally came as he got the win on Saturday night, tying the franchise career win record of 45 previously held by Greg Salvevold. Thirteen hits and three RedHawks players with multiple hits came through to help snap the five-game losing streak.
Just like last night, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks managed to take an early lead in the ballgame. This time, it was two runs in the bottom of the second. Back-to-back hits by C.J. Retherford (double to left) and Sawyer Carroll (single to left) gave an opportunity for Brandon Tripp to collect two RBIs with his one-out double to deep center field, 2-0 RedHawks.
Cutting the lead in half was Tim Colwell, when he hit a sacrifice fly to plate Oscar Mesa, an unearned run reaching on a throwing error by the Fargo-Moorhead's shortstop Frank Salerno.
In the bottom of the fourth the RedHawks struck again, putting up three more runs on the scoreboard. Carroll opened up the frame with a single, and wit htwo outs, Travis Higg's double assured Carroll could score the first run of the frame. Anthony Kaskadden would follow up with his first hit of the night and after Frank Salerno drew a walk, the bases were loaded. Ronnie Bourquin took advantage of a nice 1-2 pitch and brought in Higgs and Kaskadden for a four-run lead. In the very next inning, in the bottom of the fifth, the 3,302 fans saw the RedHawks extend their lead once again. Last night's signee Michael Thompson got his first RBI as a RedHawk by plating Retherford, who hit his second double of the night. At that point, the scoreboard read 6-1 for the home team.
The Sioux City Explorers were unable to find an answer to any of those runs, and the RedHawks kept pilling on. Putting the game out of the reach was Travis Higgs in the bottom of the seventh inning, providing enough insurance for the pitching (Laber up until that point). Retherford got a lead-off walk, with Carroll following it up with a single. With two men out, Higgs waited out a perfect 1-1 pitch, which he lifted over the left-field wall just clearing the scoreboard for a three-run home run, his fourth of the year. Then, the visitors trailed by eight runs. Another two insurance runs were scored by the RedHawks in the bottom of the eight by Nic Jackson (sent home by Retherford) and by Retherford (scoring on a wild pitch). After eight complete, the score was 11-1 in Fargo-Moorhead's favor.
One run scored by Sioux City in the top of the ninth meant no harm, as Nate Garcia finished the frame with no save.
Jake Laber earned the win on the night (7-10 on the year), tying the RedHawks franchise record (held by Greg Salvevold) at 45 career wins. The loss went to Lars Ligouri (1-4 on the year). There was no save. At the plate, Sawyer Carroll had a good night (4-for-5 with four singles), Retherford 3-for-4 with three doubles and an RBI, and finally Higgs going 2-for-3 with a double, three-run home run and four RBIs on the night.
The last game of the three-game series finishes up tomorrow at 1pm. Tickets available at (701) 235-6161.
