DURHAM, NC -The Durham Bulls (69-64) put an end to the three game winning streak of the Gwinnett Braves (59-74) with a 5-2 victory in the opener of the four game series Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Bulls never trailed and got off to a great start, scoring their first run off of G-Braves starter Cody Martin in the bottom of the second. With one out, Martin walked both Jeremy Moore and Tim Beckham. Vince Belnome lined a single to left, scoring Moore from third for a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Martin gave up a two out single to left to Cole Figueroa and Mikie Mahtook (9) followed with a two run homer to left center to up the Durham lead to 3-0.
The G-Braves scored their first run in the top of the sixth. Sean Kazmar led off with a single to left off of Durham starting pitcher Alex Colome and advanced to third on a fielding error by Moore. He raced around to home on an RBI groundout by Ozzie Martinez, making it 3-1.
The Bulls took the run right back, scoring in the bottom of the frame. Tim Beckham led off with a single to center off of Martin and moved to second on a walk to Belnome. Ray Olmedo bunted the runners up one base,and Mayo Acosta plated Beckham from third with a sacrifice fly to center to give Durham a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Joe Leonard greeted Colome with a single to right and Elmer Reyes cracked a long triple to left-center, scoring Leonard to make it 4-2.
But in the bottom of the eighth, Gwinnett reliever Daniel Rodriguez gave up a one out double to left to Belnome and then an RBI single to right by Olmedo for the fifth and final run of the night.
Martin (L, 6-8) pitched 5.1 innings with six hits, four earned runs, four walks and eight strikeouts. James Hoyt went 1.1 innings with one hit. Rodriguez pitched 0.2 of an inning with two hits, one earned run and two strikeouts. Gus Schlosser worked 0.2 of an inning with one walk.
Colome (W, 7-5) went 7.0 innings with six hits, two runs (one earned), two walks and seven strikeouts. Steve Geltz pitched 0.2 of an inning with one hit and two strikeouts. Adam Liberatore (S, 1) worked 1.1 innings and struck out two or the save.
For the Braves at the plate, Brandon Boggs was 2-for-4 with a triple. Leonard and Todd Cunningham were each 1-for-3.
For Durham, Belnome and Olmedo were each 2-for-3 with an RBI. Belnome added a run. Mahtook was 1-for-4 with a run and a homer and two RBIs.
The two teams meet in game two Saturday night in Durham. RHP Aaron Northcraft (0-6, 6.18) will start for Gwinnett. The Bulls will start LHP Mike Montgomery (9-5, 4.29).
