Stingrays Acquire ECHL Rights to Former Bakersfield Condors Captain Joel Broda

North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays, celebrating 22 seasons of hockey in the Lowcountry, acquired the ECHL rights of forward Joel Broda from the Bakersfield Condors in exchange for the rights of forward Peter Boyd, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Spencer Carbery announced today.

Broda, 24, served as the Condors' team captain last season, led the team with 21 goals, finished sixth with 40 points in 41 games, stood fourth on the team with a plus-minus rating of +7 and guided the Condors on their longest playoff run in team history, adding a team-high eight goals and ranked second with 12 points in 16 postseason contests.

Agreeing to terms with the Stingrays' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Hershey Bears, earlier this week, the Yorkton, Saskatchewan, native dressed in 25 total AHL contests last season with the Oklahoma City Barons and Bridgeport Sound Tigers netting eight points (three goals, five assists). In Hershey, Broda is reunited with former Condors and Columbia Inferno Head Coach Troy Mann and former Condors Assistant Coach Ryan Murphy.

A 2008 selection (5th round, 144th overall) of the Washington Capitals, a National Hockey League (NHL) affiliate of the Stingrays, Broda skated in 76 career ECHL games with the Condors and Orlando Solar Bears picking up 72 points (39 goals, 33 assists) and joined the host Condors in the 2011 ECHL All-Star Game. At the AHL level, the 6-foot, 203-pound forward buried 46 points (24 goals, 22 assists) in 149 games with the Barons, Sound Tigers and Houston Aeros.

Boyd, 26, led the Stingrays in scoring last season with 63 points (25 goals, 38 assists) in 63 games and racked up 73 total points (29 goals, 44 assists) over 73 games in a Stingrays uniform. The Cambridge-Narrows, New Brunswick, product returns to Bakersfield where he played from 2011-2013 before arriving to the Lowcountry via trade.
