Hounds and Hooks Split Double Dip

August 22, 2014 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release

The Wizard of Oz's classic cat put it perfectly when, awakened by snow in a field of poppies, he said "peculiar weather we're havin', ain't it."

Thursday's double-header opened on a 95-dgree late afternoon with winds gusting as high as 25 miles-per-hour ... and ended with the temperature in the low 80's and virtually calm conditions. In between, a dust storm (later cleared by a brief rain shower) accompanied by winds of 30+ miles-per-hour ripped through the ballpark. In that time, the Corpus Christi Hooks erupted for a five-run third inning, going onto a 5-0 win to gain a split of the double-dip. The RockHounds, scoring three times in the second, took the opener, 4-1.

In the nightcap, RockHounds starter Drew Granier retired the first eight batters he faced, five by strikeout. In the third, with the storm building, he walked Tyler Heineman on a close 3-2 pitch with the bases empty and two out. A four-pitch walk to Delino DeShields, Jr. was followed by a pair of RBI singles with another run scoring on a passed ball, and capped by Telvin Nash's two run home run to center. The towering blast, Nash's league-leading 21st of the season, was almost surrealistic, virtually disappearing into a vail of blowing dust and clouds.

Kenny Wilson saw his 15-game hit streak come to an end. After going 3-of-3 in the opener, Wilson went 0-for-3 in the night cap. The streak fell one short of the Texas League's longest of the season (set by former RockHound Anthony Aliotti ). Baseball can be cruel ... Kenny was on deck when the (seven-inning) game ended). He has hit in 16-of-18 games as a member of the 'Hounds, with a .397 batting average.

Dusty Coleman had three strikeouts, bringing his season total to 188 and breaking the existing Texas League all-time high of 186, set by Albuquerque's Willie Crawford in 1966. The RockHounds shortstop's season is a remarkable statistical dichotomy, as he also leads the league in runs scored (72) ... is tied for the lead in RBI (69) ... ranks fourth in extra-base hits (41) and is fifth in home runs (15). Jose Flores earned his 10th save in as many chances in game one. In his 10 save opportunities, Flores has a 0.00 ERA, allowing four hits in 12.0 innings. Ironically, his strikeout of Jonathan Meyer was Jose's first "whiff" in seven appearances.

In game two, half of the 42 outs came via strikeout . Hooks pitching struck out 11 and the RockHounds 10. Corpus starter Jordan Jankowski had nine whiffs and has been rough on the 'Hounds. He struck out 36 batters and walked just seven in 29.1 innings over the season series.
