 River City Rascals

Rascals Tame Wild Things, Win Series

August 21, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release

The Rascals rode a strong start from Kyle Brady and some timely hitting from Jon Myers to a win in their August 21st rubber match with the Washington Wild Things. By defeating the Wild Things by a final of 3-1, River City moved to twenty games over .500 on the year and captured their fifth series in their last six.

Brady was phenomenal on the turf mound of Consol Energy Park. He surrendered a single in the first to Scott Kalamar, but was lights out after. The tall righty struck out the side in the second and would finish the night with five Ks.

Opposing him on the mound for Washington was Scott Dunn. The Rascals initially struggled to capitalize against Dunn, stranding two men in both the first and third innings. But the Raskie bats broke through in the fourth. Hector Crespo got things started in that frame by sending a one-out triple to right center to put himself in prime scoring position. Jon Myers, who had three hits in the Wednesday doubleheader, drove him in with a single to right to give River City a 1-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Brady kept cruising. He put the exclamation point on his night by getting Kalamar to groundout to Hector Crespo at second to end the sixth. Brady would finish with a superb final line of 6 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 5 K.

The Rascals would build their lead late in the game. With two outs, Johnny Morales reached with a walk. Al Yevoli then entered the game in place of Dunn and hit Saxon Butler before surrendering a cannon double to Joe Staley that plated Morales and make it a 2-0 lead. Myers would pick up another RBI on an infield single in the top of the ninth to put the Rascals up comfortably 3-0.

Gabe Shaw entered to pitch the bottom of the ninth. He surrendered a leadoff homer to Jose Dore, but after that, held the Wild Things scoreless to secure his twenty-fourth save of the season.

The Rascals now head to Lake Erie for a three-game set with the Crushers. First pitch in Game 1 will be thrown Friday at 7:05 ET/6:05 CT.
