Lancaster Stormers News Release

Fred Lewis backpedaled like he might have a play.

He was just kidding.

Cole Garner belted a one-out solo home run to left in the top of the 10th inning to provide the Lancaster Barnstormers with a much needed, 4-3, victory over the Bridgeport Bluefish Thursday evening at Harbor Yard.

Lancaster managed to stay within one game of Long Island in the wild card race in the Atlantic League playoff hunt.

Garner connected off Tim Gustafson (2-5). It was the first hit in 10 innings of work for the Bridgeport right-handed ace this season.

The Barnstormers took advantage of an extra inning chance that nearly never happened. With Lancaster ahead, 3-2, in the bottom of the eighth, Brandon Mann got the first out, and Cody Eppley picked up the second. Eppley, however, lost the strike zone, missing with nine straight pitches, giving up walks to Ramon Castro and Luis Lopez. Bridgeport pinch ran for Lopez, sending speedster Mike Richard to first base. Casper Wells worked the count to 3-2 and, with the runners on the move, ripped a single into left center. Castro easily scored the tying run, and manager Willie Upshaw waved Richard around as well. Lance Zawadzki appeared to double clutch on the relay throw home, but he made an accurate one. Plate umpire Joe Cruz rang out Richard on a close play, drawing a lengthy argument from Upshaw.

Pete Andrelczyk (4-7) then survived two singles and a walk in the ninth when he struck out Luis Rodriguez with the bases loaded.

Bridgeport scored twice in the second. JR Towles drew a walk from Shunsuke Watanabe and moved to second on a single by Castro. One out later, Wells singled into right. Towles was able to score on a strong throw by Brett Carroll, and the other runners moved up on the play at the plate. A passed ball by Keith Castillo allowed Castro to score the second run.

Brett Carroll slammed a solo homer off Tomo Okha in the fourth to bring Lancaster within one. Okha lost his luster in the seventh. Castillo and Reegie Corona ripped back-to-back doubles to the right side to tie the game. Corona went to third and scored on Yusuke Kajimoto's line drive sacrifice fly to left.

Jason Urquidez entered in the 10th and pitched a 1-2-3 inning for his 18th save. He struck out two.
