United Look to Extend Ten-Game Unbeaten Streak at Site of Last Loss Saturday in New York

August 21, 2014 - North American Soccer League (NASL) - Minnesota United FC News Release

Minneapolis, Minn. (Thursday, August 21st, 2014) -- First place Minnesota United (5W-1T-0L, 16pts) look to extend its North American Soccer League unbeaten streak to eleven games this Saturday against the club that delivered its last loss, the New York Cosmos (2W-2T-3L, 8pts). The match is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT at James M. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, NY. Fans can watch the match live on NASLlive.com and ESPN3.

After scoring five goals last weekend in a dominant performance against Indy Eleven, United will be focused only on the number zero for this weekend's matchup against the New York Cosmos. United has scored zero goals and earned zero points against the Cosmos all time. This trend of zero is something United is prepared to change this weekend at Hofstra's Shuart Stadium in New York.

"We're going to prepare as well as we can, we obviously know that New York is a very good team," said United Head Coach Manny Lagos. "They've had our number in very close games the last couple of times, so we're going to do our best to prepare well for a big week. We've been doing very well on the field. It's going to be important for us to use that confidence going into a tough environment this weekend."

United will take some solace in the fact that each of its three losses came by a scoreline of 1-0. United has shown great ability keeping the Cosmos away from the net, but struggled to score. After last weekend's trouncing of Indy Eleven, the team has every reason to be confident that this trip to New York will be different.

Led by reigning NASL Players of the Week, Christian Ramirez and Daniel Mendes, who together have tallied more goals this Fall Season than the entire New York Cosmos side, United will be difficult to keep off the score sheet this time around. However, the Cosmos are the best defensive team in the league, allowing just 12 goals this year. It's a challenge Minnesota United will meet head on. Ramirez leads the NASL Golden Boot race with 12 goals and has been named Player of the Week in two of the previous three weeks.

"They're a very good team, they're defending champions and I think that is something we are aware of," said Lagos. "Every game is important and this one is obviously going to be important for them because of where they are on the table."

Available to join United on the trip to New York will be new additions to the team Forwards Rafael Burgos and Pedro Mendes. Each will help to bolster a strong Minnesota United attack and break the trend of zero for United. Pedro Mendes was included in United's 18-player roster against Indy Eleven, but didn't get any time on the pitch against his former team. It is possible he could make his debut against New York this Saturday .
