John Vanbiesbrouck to Speak at National Hockey Coaches Symposium

MUSKEGON, Michigan (August 21st) - The 2014 National Hockey Coaches Symposium heads to the J.W. Marriott Resort and Spa in Las Vegas, Nevada this weekend and features aspiring coaches seeking to attain their Level Five certification, the highest level of certification offered by USA Hockey's Coaching Education Program. Held Thursday through Sunday, Muskegon Lumberjacks General Manager and Director of Hockey Operations John Vanbiesbrouck will be a guest speaker for the marquee event on Sunday participating in a panel discussion from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm (PDT) that includes former NHL veterans Igor Larionov and Luc Robitaille along with moderator Lou Vairo, Director of Special Projects and former coach for USA Hockey.

Held every other year and presented by USA Hockey, the National Hockey Coaches Symposium consists of general sessions with numerous guest speakers from the NHL, AHL, Europe, and NCAA along with breakout sessions designed to give up-and-coming coaches the opportunity to explore new approaches to their coaching philosophy through intense group sessions based on the age level of their players. In addition, each coach will submit a thesis focused on their coaching development and philosophy along with practice plans based on the ages of their respective players.

Additional notable speakers for this year's symposium include the following:

- Dean Lombardi - General Manager, Los Angeles Kings (NHL)

- Jack Capuano - Head Coach, New York Islanders (NHL)

- John Hynes - Head Coach, Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins (AHL)

- Jon Cooper - Head Coach, Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL)

- Jeff Blashill - Head Coach, Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL)

- Dan Bylsma - Head Coach, 2014 U.S. Men's Olympic Team

Coaches that have completed their Level One-Four training prior to May 1, 2014 and have not attended a Level Four clinic in May, June, or July of this year are eligible to participate at the Level Five Symposium. In 2012, the National Hockey Coaches Symposium was held in Washington, D.C. with 329 coaches receiving their Level Five certification and Brian Burke, Dan Bylsma, Jon Cooper, Kevin Dineen, George McPhee, Eddie Olczyk, Peter Laviolette, Ron Rolston, Joe Sacco, and Mike Sullivan among the featured guest speakers.
