Kalamazoo Wings News Release

KALAMAZOO - The excitement of the final weeks of summer vacation can't compare to the electricity that is flowing through the Kalamazoo Wings roster as the team added to their offensive arsenal this afternoon with signing of forwards Matt Caria (care-EE-uh) and Lane Scheidl (SHY-dell).

Using his teaching degree from Lakehead University to take his opponents to school Matt Caria had a productive ECHL rookie campaign.

Recording 58 points (24 goals, 34 assists), Caria was the K-Wings' Omni Source Leading Scorer and earned a spot on the ECHL All-Rookie Team. Caria's scoring prowess lifted him through the regular season by registering point streaks of four or more games on six separate occasions. Again leading the K-Wings in scoring in the playoffs Caria recorded a team-high four goals in six playoff contests.

Caria joined the K-Wings after completing his collegiate career with Lakehead University. During his senior year, Caria scored 10 goals and dished out an outstanding 27 assists in just 25 games.

A NOJHL Rookie of the Year in 2004, Caria was drafted at the completion of that season by the St. Michael's Majors in the Ontario Hockey League. After four seasons in the OHL, Caria received his first taste of professional hockey playing in 14 games in the ECHL with the Utah Grizzlies and the Florida Everblades. After those 14 games, Caria put his pro career on hold to go to school and play hockey at Lakehead University.

In 2007, Caria participated in the Pittsburgh Penguins rookie camp, where he scored a goal in the camp's championship game.

Slowed by an injured plagued season a year ago, Lane Scheidl looks to rebound in 2014-15. Entering his second full pro season Scheidl spent last season in the AHL with the Worcester Sharks and in the ECHL with the Ontario Reign. Scheidl posted five points (3 goals, 2 assists) with the Regin, while tallying five points (2 goals, 3 assists) in 23 contests for the Sharks.

The native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan played five seasons of junior hockey, including the 2012-13 season where he led the Regina Pals (WHL) with 80 points (41 goals, 39 assists) and 16 power-play goals in 72 games. Scheidl would conclude his junior career by being named the Pats Player of the Year and their Three Stars Award winner.

In total Scheidl accumulated 186 points (88-98-186) in 277 career games in the WHL with Vancouver, Red Deer and Regina.

Following his final season with Regina, Scheidl began his pro career by playing in the final 11 games of the season with Worcester.

Season tickets, flexi-plans and group tickets for the upcoming 2014-15 season are currently on sale at the K-Wings front office by calling (269) 743-6011.

The additions of Caria and Scheidl gives the K-Wings nine players signed for the upcoming 2014-15 season. Also signed for this season are forwards Jean Bourbeau, Eric Kattelus, Justin Taylor defensemen Sam Ftorek (fah-TORE-ick), James Isaac, Ben Wilson and goaltender Joel Martin.
