Shorebirds Game Notes at Lexington
August 20, 2014 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
PREVIEW: The Shorebirds went to extra innings for the second straight night, this on the wrong end of the tenth inning decision, 5-4 loss to Lexington. Delmarva led 4-1 after a four-run fourth inning. The Shorebirds stranded the go-ahead run on third base in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. But in the tenth, a throwing error with two outs gave Lexington the walkoff win.
TODAY'S OPPONENT: Luke Farrell will start the series finale for the Lexington Legends. Farrell has had a rough year for Lexington, going 1-12 with a 5.17 ERA. The right-hander started against Delmarva back on June 21st, taking a loss in a 2-1 game by allowing two unearned runs in seven innings. Farrell's only win came back on May 7th against Asheville. The Royals drafted Farrell in the 6th round of the 2013 MLB Draft. Luke is the son of Red Sox manager John Farrell.
19TH SEASON: The 2014 season marks the 19th season of Shorebirds baseball on the Eastern Shore and 18th straight year as a Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The Shorebirds' first season was 1996 as a Montreal Expos farm team.
ORIOLES WATCH: The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Chicago White Sox, 5-1 on Tuesday eve- ning. Chris Tillman pitched a gem, allowing just three hits in eight innings with a solo home run allowed to Jose Abreu as the only true mistake. Now 20 games over .500 at 72-52, the O's hold a 8 1/2 game lead over the rest of the American League East.
RACE FOR A BATTING TITLE: Two Shorebirds are in the running for the league batting title at year's end. Chance Sisco (.337) and Drew Dosch (.320) are both in the top 7 in the South Atlantic League among qualifying hitters in batting average. Michael Benjamin of the Asheville Tourists currently leads the league with a .341 mark, but he is currently on the disabled list and likely would not have enough plate appearances to qualify at the end of the season.
