Matthes Continues to Torch Hooks

August 20, 2014 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release

Everything Except The Marching Band & Royal Court

In other words, it was a terrific "homecoming" for the RockHounds. After a 2-4 road trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Springfield, Missouri, the 'Hounds got "off the bus and on the board," building a 6-0 lead after three innings, and went on to defeat the Corpus Christi Hooks, 15-2.

The first two RBI swings came with two out in the first and second innings on a Max Muncy two-run single and a Kent Matthes three-run triple, respectively. Dusty Coleman made it a 6-0 game with a solo home run in the third, and the 'Hounds never looked back. All nine batters either scored or drove in at least one run ... with six hitters each contributing at least one run and at least one ribbie.

Matthes led the way with a five-RBI night ... continuing his amazing success with the bases loaded (see below) ... and Coleman drove in three runs, moving into a tie for the Texas League lead with 69 RBI for the season. The home run was Dusty's 14th (giving him the the team lead) and the run scored on the solo shot was his league-leading 71st (seven more than any other player in the TL).

Muncy also had a three-RBI night, and is now third in the league with 61 runs batted in for the year. He also drew a pair of walks, his 78th and 79th of the year, 14 more than any other TL hitter, and finished 3-for-4 (on base in 5-of-6). Max is 7-for-12 (four RBI) in his last three games.

Corpus Christi pitchers allowed 29 base runners, including 16 hits and 13 walks (three of those with the bases loaded).

WP: Shawn Haviland (6-7, 3.97)

LP: Josh Hader (0-1, 9.28)

HR: RockHounds - Dusty Coleman (15) Solo in the third (off David Rollins)

Kibbles & Bits

- The RockHounds are now 19-10 against Corpus Christi in 2014 ... 8-8 at Whataburger Field and 11-2 at Security bank Ballpark ... the 'Hounds won their 70th game of the season and, at 70-57, trail Frisco (74-52) by four-and-a-half games for the league's top overall record.

Second Half : Frisco scored three runs in the eighth for a come-from-behind (5-4) home win over San Antonio ... the RoughRiders (34-23) hold a two-game lead over the RockHounds (32-25), but also increased their advantage over San Antonio and Corpus Christi (both 26-31) to eight games with 13 games remaining in the regular season.

Wild Card : If first half champion Frisco maintains its lead in the second half race, the South Division's second playoff team would be a wild card, based on the best season record. The RockHounds (70-57) lead San Antonio (62-65) by eight games and Corpus Christi (60-67) by 10. The RockHounds' "magic number" to clinch the wild card (over San Antonio) is down to five.

Remaining Schedule : There are 13 games remaining in the 2014 regular season. The RockHounds have three games versus Corpus Christi (home), four versus San Antonio (road), and six versus Frisco (three at home, three in the Metroplex).

- Kenny Wilson (2-6, two runs, RBI) extended his hit streak to 14 games (24-60, .400) and has hit in 15-of-16 games (.388) with the 'Hounds.

- Kent Matthes has been remarkable with the bases loaded. He went 2-for-2 Tuesday night, with a triple and a double, driving in five runs. With the "ducks on the pond," Kent is 8-for-14 (.571) with four grand slam home runs and twenty-seven runs batted in.

- In addition to his 2-for-5 night (HR, three RBI), Dusty Coleman also had a pair of strikeouts, bringing his season total to 185. He sets a new franchise single season record and is one short of the all-time Texas League mark of 186 (Willie Crawford, Albuquerque, 1966).

- The RockHounds host Corpus Christi through Friday night, followed by a three-game series with the Frisco RoughRiders (Saturday-Monday).
