Series Preview: Batavia vs. Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, NY - Sunday afternoon's loss to the Batavia Muckdogs might have been the toughest of the year for the Jamestown Jammers. After holding a 3-2 lead heading into the top of the ninth inning, the Jammers couldn't record the last out, and would end up suffering a heartbreaking defeat, 4-3. The Jammers will now look to bounce back after that tough loss tonight at Diethrick Park at 7:05pm against those same Muckdogs. The first 500 fans through the gate tonight will receive a free foam finger. Gates will open at 6pm.

Jamestown enters tonight's contest with an overall record of 29-32. They sit five games behind the Brooklyn Cyclones in the New York-Penn League Wild Card Standings. The Jammers also find themselves eight games back of the State College Spikes, who lead the Pinckney Division with an overall record of 38-25.

Batavia has a record of 29-34, and is six games behind the Cyclones in the Wild Card Race. They sit nine games behind State College in the Pinckney Division.

The 2014 New York-Penn League All-Star Game took place last night at MCU Park in Brooklyn. The North and South teams would battle to a 1-1 tie after nine innings of play. Jammers outfielder Carl Anderson went 1-for-2 with a single, Sam Street pitched 2/3 of an inning and retired both batters, and Kevin Ross went 0-for-1 with a walk.

Wednesday, August 20th: LHP Scott Squier (Batavia, 2-2, 2.81 ERA) vs. RHP Frank Duncan (Jamestown, 3-2, 3.22 ERA)

Scott Squier: Left-handed pitcher from Phoenix, Arizona. 16th round pick in the 2014 Draft out of the University of Hawaii. Has made 10 appearances for Batavia in 2014 (three starts). In 32 innings, Squier has given up 26 hits, 11 runs (10 earned), has walked 12, struck out 27, has a record of 2-2, and an ERA of 2.81.

Frank Duncan: Right-handed pitcher from San Francisco, California. 13th round pick in the 2014 Draft out of the University of Kansas. Has made 11 starts for the Jammers so far in 2014. In 50 1/3 innings, Duncan has given up 51 hits, 20 runs (18 earned), has walked nine, struck out 38, has a 3-2 record, and an ERA of 3.22

Thursday, August 21st: LHP Gabriel Castellanos (Batavia, 2-6, 5.14 ERA) vs. Montana DuRapau (Jamestown, 2-2, 2.54 ERA)

Gabriel Castellanos: Left-handed pitcher from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Acquired as a non-drafted free agent in 2010. Has made 12 starts for the Muckdogs in 2014. In 56 innings, Castellanos has given up 49 hits, 45 runs (32 earned), has walked 40, struck out 49, has a 2-6 record, and an ERA of 5.14.

Montana DuRapau: Right-handed pitcher from Deltona, Florida. 32nd round pick in the 2014 Draft out of Bethune Cookman University. Has made 12 appearances for the Jammers so far in 2014 (eight starts). In 46 innings, DuRapau has given up 44 hits, 16 runs (13 earned), has walked six, struck out 38, has a 2-2 record, and an ERA of 2.54.

Players to Watch (Jamestown)

Elvis Escobar (Outfielder): Escobar entered the All-Star break on an absolute tear. In his last nine games, he is hitting a scorching .389, with 14 hits, in 36 at-bats, with one home run, and eight runs scored over that span. On the season, Escobar is hitting .330 in 26 games, with 32 hits in 97 at-bats, three doubles, one triple, one home run, and four runs driven in. He is also third on the team in stolen bases, with six.

Michael Suchy (Outfielder): In his last 10 games, Suchy is hitting .306, with 11 hits in 36 at-bats, and three runs driven in. On the season, Suchy is hitting .250 in 52 games, with 47 hits in 188 at-bats, six doubles, five triples, and 13 RBIs.

Frank Duncan (Starting Pitcher): In his last 2 starts, Duncan has thrown 11 innings, given up eight hits, only one earned run, has struck out 15 batters, and has picked up 2 wins. He will get the nod tonight against the Muckdogs.

Players to Watch (Batavia)

Carlos Duran (Infielder): Duran picked up a huge go-ahead two run double in the top of the ninth inning Sunday afternoon to give the Muckdogs the 4-3 win over the Jammers. In his last 10 games, Duran is hitting .343, with 12 hits in 35 at-bats, and four runs driven in over that span. On the season, Duran is hitting .287 in 42 games, with 47 hits in 164 at-bats, 10 doubles, and 16 RBIs.

Mason Davis (Infielder): Davis is third in the New York-Penn League in hitting, with a .332 average in 50 games. On the season, he also has 63 total hits in 190 at-bats, 12 doubles, five triples, three home runs, and 26 RBIs. In his last 10 games, Davis is hitting .359, with 14 hits in 39 at-bats, and three runs driven in.
