Louisville Bats News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, In. - Looking to build on a two-game winning streak, the Louisville Bats dropped game five of a six-game split series with the Indianapolis Indians 7-3 on Tuesday night at Victory Field.
The Indians scored a pair of runs in the first two innings of the game and extended their lead to 5-0 after a three-run bottom of the third. Leading the charge for the Tribe was Chase d'Arnaud, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, and Mel Rojas, who was 1-for-3 with a walk and three RBI.
Louisville lit up the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Neftali Soto singled to center field, scoring Donald Lutz and trimming the Indians' lead to 5-1. The Bats scored again in the following inning when Ruben Gotay grounded out to first base, scoring pitcher Josh Smith who had doubled to start the inning.
The Indians added two more runs to take the 7-2 lead before the Bats scored their final run of the game. In the top of the ninth inning, Steve Selsky was pushed across the plate when Jason Bourgeois slapped a double to right field to lock the score at 7-3.
Bourgeois, who entered the night tied with Aaron Herr for most hits in a single season since Herr's 139 in 2007, went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Recording hit number 143 of the season, Bourgeois now leads Louisville batters for most hits in a season dating back to Raul Gonzalez' 144 in 2002. The speedy center fielder also earned his team-leading 41st multi-hit game, surpassing the most multi-hit games in a season since Zack Cozart recorded 40 in 2010.
Bats right-hander Josh Smith (10-6, 4.68) made his 22nd start of the year and suffered the loss, pitching five and one-third innings while allowing six earned runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts. Smith earned his 600th career strikeout in the third inning when he fanned Indians second baseman Tommy Field to end the inning.
Indianapolis righty Jake Brigham (3-5, 4.33) earned the win, going six and one-third and permitting only two earned runs on 10 hits. Right-hander Josh Kinney, who pitched an inning and two-thirds of another, was credited with his fifth hold of the year.
The Bats will look to split the series with Indianapolis tomorrow afternoon at 1:35 p.m. when they send southpaw Scott Diamond (5-10, 6.27) to face right-hander Adrian Sampson (0-1, 12.27) at Victory Field.
